Sony's profitability goal; 3D gaming and digital distribution

It seems the latest 3D technology is really taking off. With a host of feature films, IMAX movies, and new TVs that support 3D, it only feels inevitable that video games will also eventually embrace the 3D craze. There are already games that support 3D, but in a recent presentation by Sony, the company says it plans to upgrade PlayStation 3 consoles with full 3D support.

Sony plans to upgrade consoles to support 3D, as reported by Kotaku, and the company will also release games in 3D to take advantage of this new technology. Keep in mind; 3D gaming will require 3D televisions, which are currently priced rather high.

The 3D upgrade is in line with Sony’s plans at profitability. According to the Washington Post, Sony plans to be profitable by March of 2013. Its plan is not only to be profitable, but to also operate at a five perfect margin. Sony’s original plan was to be profitable by March of 2008, but the breakdown in the economy likely kept that from being a reality.

Sony also plans on the gaming division gaining profitability in March of 2011, likely through digital distribution. In regards to digital distribution, there were some hints today that Sony may soon start charging for online PlayStation Network gameplay, as reported by VG247.

“SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network,” said the SCE boss Kaz Hirai.

“Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.”

The idea appears to keep the PSN free, but to add a layer of premium subscription based content. You can see more of Sony’s presentation here.

i think that thats a good idea, that way they keep the online play free, but they still make money on other products so it would make good business sense for them, and not be a problem for the users either

rather than all out charging for PSN

Im getting more and more warmed up towards Digital Distribution. Maybe it really is whats to come.. Tho i do feel safer having a physical copy.

With digital distribution i always feel like i dont really own the game.

cool, i was thinking, nooooooo, they can't make us subscribe for PSN it's something 'we' have over the 360, but i agree completely with what no.1 said, makes sense, but if i'm gonna pay, i expect Sony to really ramp things up

I wish I knew about this whole "3D TV" thing before I bought my 40 inch 1080p LCDTV.  Guess I'm gonna be missing out until its time to upgrade to a Bravia in a couple years.

    @Versus

They are mostly TVs that run 120hz,which sucks for me because I just got a TV that runs 60hz!

Personally I think they should concentrate on maximizing there profits on the ps3 as it is.. making a profit on 3d gaming when nobody has a 3d capable tv at the moment is not the smartest of ideas.  ( It will also be slow to catch on as many people are happy with there hd tv at the moment and don't want to make another huge investment )

Sounds like a good plan to me. More options for consumers is basically the gist of it.

it would be a bad idea to do DD only and 3D only, they will lose customers if they do that... HDTV's aren't even standard yet(though they are very close to becoming the standar) people are not going to want upgrade to a 3D TV for at least several years after upgrading to HDTV

    1. don't make us pay, the way it works now is fine. 2. would 3d glasses cancel out the need for a 3d tv lol

on PS3, i think they will the PS Eye camera to detect the viewing angle of the player and it adjusts the perspective through software to suit the players position in relation to the screen so that every tv can handle it, it can be pushed to rum up to 120fps (me and some classmates tested for a school project) and since most of the lcd tv's are pushing the evenlope in terms of hz, it is actually duable

I saw Avatar at the Eurogamer expo in 3D and thought it was rubbish, sure it was using 3D technology but the shapes coming out of the screen were flat it looked like a pop up book and just made me cringe. On the upside the glasses looked hillarious and my friends and I had a laugh with them.

just had a look at that presentation and it does't state that online gaming wont be free. I hope it remains free, but my feeling is that it`l end up being free to log into the network to get demo's & video`s etc, but to play online you`d pay a small fee  (less than xbox live of course)

i really hope that i`m wrong but a lot of folk will be getting there hopes up now expecting free gaming & then when the price-bomb hits, a lot of negativity will ensue from gamers etc.

Sometimes it's the 'what they don't say' that has more of an effect on people.

I don't want to pay for playing online, and that's one of the reasons people purshed a ps3 instead of an xbox 360!
