PlayStation 3 confirmed to support 3D Blu-ray discs

It was only a matter of time before 3D Blu-ray discs were officially finalized. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) today announced the finalization and release of the “Blu-ray 3D” specification, bringing Hollywood’s new 3D experience to people’s homes.

The “Blu-ray 3D” specification allows for full HD 1080p quality. Of course, you’ll need a compatible 3D television, which are still quite expensive. These new specifications are nice, but what is great for PlayStation 3 owners is that the specifications state the console will support 3D Blu-ray discs.

We recently spoke with John Koller, Sony Computer Entertainment America’s director of hardware marketing, who said 3D gaming is important to the PS3’s success in 2010. It looks like gaming is not the only form of entertainment getting the 3D makeover in 2010; in fact, we’ll probably see a lot of 3D movies coming next year.

If you’ve been to a 3D movie in a theater, you are probably as excited as we are to go see another 3D movie; but, we are a bit skeptical about the jump to home entertainment systems. Given the need for a new TV, do you think you’ll invest in the new technology, either for gaming or new Blu-ray movies?

so do you need to wear those 80's glasses with a 3D tv? also can the 3D tv switch back to normal viewing?

Little things like this are why I am loyal to SONY and the PS3.  I don't care for 3-d movies, but hey, they did something that further adds to the capabilities of the PS3.

The Playstation Theory. It's Just like DragonBall Z's Cell. PS1 had to evolve into a PS2, PS3 had to absorb PS2 and PSP to gain Perfection. Look at this system so perfect makes me want to cry sometime. ;(

this really add's to the PS3 als a multimedia device...I'm keen on the things that are still to come. I bet they haven't even scratched the surface with PS3's multimedia capabilities. That's why I love this machine so much. And what makes XBOX and Wii inferior, besides the fact that the XBOX is a pretty neat gaming machine imho. Go for it Sony, show em' why you have managed to make the best selling console ever (PS2) and show 'em that PS3 will step up.

jezzz man, I invested £2000 in a new fully Hi Def TV a few years back now for my PS3.... I certainly won't be spending another £2000+ for a new 3D one any time soon. Anyway, I think it would be better to wait and get an OLED 3D TV!

I doubt many people will upgrade their 1080p HDTVs to 3D until those TVs die, which could be well into the PS4's lifecycle. 3D will take a long time to become popular.

I think this is the worst news i've heard this month, 3d gaming ? are you serious Sony ?

If i have to buy a new set to play these 3d games then this is never gonna reach mass market. A lot of  people still don't have HDTVs...

I see FAIL all over this. Sorry Sony, i'm not buying it, concentrate on adding what gamers want, Cross-game chat and custom music.

Kinda sucks that you have to buy another TV, just to use the 3D feature. Not something i'll be doing for at least another 5-6 years seen as I've only just had my current TV for 12 months and am still quite happy with it. I'm not getting sucked into the 3D hype just yet, I think 3D game are a long way away. As for 3D movies Meh,th e only one that interests me is Avatar. If I want to see one I'll go to Cinema.

I really like the idea of 3d gaming. I don't know if you remember the 3d glasses from the sega master system. That was really cool option.

    • 4:35pm EST - December 17th, 2009

I like the idea and would like to see what it looks like.  I don't understand the naysayers - if it sucks, no one will buy it and it will fizzle out.  Sony isn't out to lose money.  However, if it's good enough for people to go out and buy a new tv set, then great.  I've got a fat old 27" waiting to be upgraded.  Sucks for those who just bought nice new sets, though.

why do I need a new tv!!!?!   If its for a pre recorded video (movies) then why cant they just re record it with the 3D effects!?

  22. Alpha2

    • 5:00pm EST - December 17th, 2009

No, I'm sorry. 3D is just as much a fad now as it was the first time. Oh sure in the next 3 years you wont be able to buy a TV that doesnt support the feature, dont get me wrong, but as long as you have to wear stupid glasses to get a 3D effect it's still no better. I want to see a REAL advancement in the technology before I go leaping into the pit.

You knwo what I want to see? 3D that doesnt require glasses, factor in all the "excitement" over motion control and you can see how that would be perferable, you want to feel like you're in the game or that you could touch the action on the screen then the only barrier should be the actual TV screen not some stinking glasses. Doesnt matter if you can get them made by RayBan or whoever, they still suck.

I have a 60" 1080p DLP HDTV that supports 3D and 3D glasses left over from when I took my ex-girlfriend to see Monsters Vs. Aliens. :D

Hopefully, unlike Monsters Vs. Aliens, these movies will have more than 2 two-second scenes in 3D.

Resident Evil 5 with the wand and 3D effects? God yes!

This why I love Sony. But in general, it is deffinitely going to take a while for this to take popularity with the masses. Reasons being the economy for one. plus we all just recently got over the DTV transition, which people are still having issuse with. Another new tv to replace our relitively new digital, and HD sets, the general consumer stll doesn't see the point in Blu-Ray discs! Though they forget how their cherished DVDs stated off similarly. Fans and enthusists, this is up to you to make this work!

Honestly i'm not too excited about 3D gaming. It's not needed, games like Uncharted 2, and MW2 are great enough without stuff popping out of the T.V.   =P

    • 10:17pm EST - December 17th, 2009

3D gaming would be awesome!!! really think about it. bullets and shrapnel flying out of the screen, explosions filling the space in front of your tv! lol. all without any pain, just a better gaming experience. 3D is the next step in gaming and idk wtf is up with people who r against it. imagine playing a 3D game with sony's motion controller! NOW WE'RE TALKING! SONY FTW!

Why would i need to buy a new tv for 3D view if they could just as easy create images (by playng with green and red colors) that look 3D on any tv! ... thats it they must be in need for more of our well earned money.

I might get a new TV for this. I've been kinda sad that my current 52" Sony Bravia looks so small hanging on the wall anyways, so I may cave for something 60"+ with 3D capabilities as my main HT set. I could always move the 52" to the bedroom to join a second PS3!!!

     h3llo ... (weird had a msg 1 banned till i change e into a 3 ;) )

    i'm new to PSU ;)

3D is a good option, i really mean option here where we can switch it ON or OFF at will & that doesn't force anyone to go buy the latest 3DTV. Any media that is released out in 3D must also be so in standard & HD only  then it will work.

The option will be added to the PS3 via Firmware update, so be it. If we have a 3DTV, then we can switch it on in-game or on the XMB.

as long as it uses the special glasses it may not work that well, still i would really like to go for it now & then if i don't feel too dizzy while at it.

Not everyone has an HDTV, so the best move will be to get a 3D compatible one, believe me it's worth it to go HD with a PS3, now having a plus with 3D is most welcome. Those having already an HDTV (like me) can be really sick about it, for it cost & we can't go for another TV that soon.

so SONY, please bring 3D to our home & let us switch it off if we don't or can't use it. I would also appreciate if you could support more countries for the services.

    cheers!

Not sure about this, but at least for the NVIDIA 3d pc setup all that is required is a monitor (or hdtv) that has at least a 120hz refresh rate, amirite?  Probably, then, lots of you already have 3d ready sets, you just don't know it yet.

fail, Sony, this is not what is going to help you beat X360 in sales.

PSN improvements, HOME improvements, Trophies improvements, more awesome games and marketing will.
