UPDATE: It should be noted that the next installment in the Assassin's Creed series does not necessarily mean a new game. To clarify, Ubisoft has not announced Assassin's Creed III, rather; the company has said "a new episode of Assassin's Creed," will feature online multiplayer. This could come in the form of DLC.
*******
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: The next installment in the Assassin’s Creed series will feature online multiplayer it and should be available by Ubisoft’s fiscal year 2010-11, the game company said today. For fans of Assassin’s Creed games, many are likely saying ‘it’s about time’ multiplayer was added.
In addition, Ubisoft said in a press release today that the 2010-11 fiscal year will see more franchise releases than 2009-10, including “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction, a new game in the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon series, Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands, Driver, Raving Rabbids 4 and a new episode of Assassin’s Creed, which will be the first in the series to have an online multiplayer mode.”
It seems Ubisoft is finally jumping on the bandwagon that is online multiplayer – it only took the company two AC games to figure it out. We are certainly excited to see how Ubisoft handles multiplayer in a stealth fighter set in a presumably historic backdrop.

This is pretty cool, I am a big fan of AC both part 1 and especially 2 was amazing.
Even though I felt multiplayer should of been included in AC2, I am still exited to see it in part 3.
P.s - 2010/11 sound pretty early, but still, looks like they know what they are doing now after AC2. -

I had a great idea for what they can do for Co-op.
2 people have to get inside this building and kill some random guy but there's more gaurds looking out, so you will have to work together. While one guy is distracting them or something the other guy just comes up behind them.

Let's just say, for example, that multiplayer is a mission based thing...
What's to say we won't just unlock a new section of the animus, that has previous and new missions with an assassin count... it would almost be like having a proper assassins guild.
You go in, talk to NPC's and pick up missions... where-by you join a lobby and wait for the required number of assassins to join.
This raises and interesting mechanic, i like the idea of co-op distractions, but what about the more POP style puzzle rooms that were introduced in AC2... maybe you need to get htree people to be ready to pull some levers so the fourth can swing through to a room or something...
i think there is an aweful lot of play on how this could all work out, including, maybe, multi assassinations, potential 'boss' style battles (say we're up against some new fangled 'trojan horse', were we need to 'assassinate' certain areas simultaneously...
I'm extremely excited about this, and we should 'only' unlock it at the end of the game (seriously, hear me out) ... i imagine there's a lot of cost saving in re-running missions on existing maps, so thats where we kick open the old game disk (or what-have-you) and go slash'em up... but you've also got the whole new story out there... we seem set to do some world travelling (whether in the animus or not is yet to be seen... i think it's gona be a mix of both to be fair... investigate the current to decipher where/what to look for in your memory to pass the area... mayan assassins for the win) so the scope of where we might team up is huge..
and what about PvP ;)
If they hash this out by this time next year i'll be extremely happy... i wonder if anyone from Ubi pops over here... i might tweet it to them...

sooo bored of multiplayer now... Uncharted 2 single player was brilliant- the game didn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t need multiplayer (i havnt even touched it). Same goes for assassins creed 2. Just let the bad SP games like MW2 have the good multiplayer. I was looking forward to MAG about a year ago... Now i don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t care for it at all. There are too many multiplayer games.

@14 In my opinion, you are wrong about Uncharted 2. Multiplayer was a nice addition , and one of the features that made the game what it is now , best game of 2009. When a game that has AMAZING single player wants some multiplayer, it is something good, because it increases its longevity thus increasing its value. Theres a huge fanbase enjoying Uncharted 2 Online right now. I think it was a great addition to the series.
