Sony: Motion Controller is "challenging" for core gamers

If you have been paying attention to gaming trends, you are probably aware that motion controllers are all the rave, or at least the concept caught the attention of the masses when the Wii was released in 2006. But now that Sony and Microsoft are introducing their own versions of motion controllers or hands-free gaming, the serious gamer may finally have something new to call their own.
For Sony, the launch of its Motion Controller – now slated for a fall release – is important to its core fans as it is to new, casual gamers. In a recent interview with PlayStation Universe, John Koller, SCEA's director of hardware marketing, said both first and third party developers are creating new ways to use the Motion Controller.
“The Motion Controller technology is fantastic in that it’s challenging for the core gamer/consumer, while remaining engaging and immersive for the social/family consumer,” Koller says. “The genres and game types launching for the Motion Control platform are amazingly diverse. Imagine using the Motion Controller as a sword, a gun, or even a wand or pen – the new controller tracks 1 to 1 to your body movements; it’s precise, yet fun – and has such intuitive controls that we think it will breathe new life into many well-established game genres as well as create great new challenges for new ones.”
While Sony says the Motion Controller will attract a new audience to the PlayStation 3, Koller says there is a “huge opportunity here to reach folks beyond our normal scope as well as challenge our PlayStation loyalists with all new gameplay experiences.”
We'll have more on the Motion Controller and our interview with Koller soon.

The tech itself nor the idea or getting around that idea is the challenging part, rather, making something compelling enough for core gamers to enjoy without making it a stupid gimick is where the real challenge is at.
The Sixaxis implementation proves that relying on just motion tech is A) Hard to do and B) a complete failure. Even Nintendo, with their motion only system struggles to use it's own technology in a meaningful way as to capture the hearts of core gamers. Waggle this way and that just gets stupid once you've done it for too long.
Sure, laughing like idiots as you flail your arms around in mini-game collection X can be fun for a bit, but core gamers NEED more than that. Core gamers are looking for the real deal in terms of realised worlds, stories, character design, interaction within those worlds and a system in place where controlling yourself in that world doesn't feel like a pain in the a##.
A game should never be built around the idea of the input device, rather the imput device should complement the experience of the game.

If they made another shadow of the colossus game but for PS3 then the wand might be interesting, but still nothing, I preffer the regualr controller, and having to buy the PS EYE to use this controller, maybe people will be thinking twice....

@7 "A game should never be built around the idea of the input device, rather the imput device should complement the experience of the game."
Very well put. I 100% agree with this statement. I do believe they might be making a mistake by trying to force companies to accomodate to their new controller.

Call me old fasioned but i will stick with the original controller. Maybe this Sony thing will be better than the Wii version BUT Went round my Wii owning friends tuesday night only to find out he had bought PES10 for it, and wanted everyone to have a go, to say it was awfull was an understatement, we all had one short match and that was it, didnt even want to try and get use to the controlls. When will he learn and get FIFA10 on the PS3

you're not gonna catch this Playstation loyalist with Wiimitation garbage! That's just trendy, sony is doing it just because Nintendo is making lots of money out of casual games with the useless wii
real hardcore-loyal-to-playstation like me, sorry but we are not going to get caught using that garbage; I have never used neither the eyetoy or the ps eye because it has no real use; only on casual games. And that's exactly what's gonna happen to the "Arc" controller
Sony may organize a parade for the lauch but it won't add anything interesting to the gameplay experience. I really hate everything to do with the arc; I wish it fails so Sony focus on their own stuff instead of emulate nintendo's recipe for lame casual "gamers"

the PS3 wand will allow more variety than the NATAL, as it doesn't have a controller at all, so you won't be able to run around a football field, or jump on big rocks in your living room, the wand, by having directional buttons, will allow to simulate large scale movement AND using your body movements

i have tow concerns about the new motion control
1- Playing the hardcore games with it . from the video demo of RE:5 using the motion controls . its looks like the weirdest thing i've ever seen in my life . why do we have to use the PS3 controller + the Arc ... cant we use 2 Arcs ?!!
2- The price point ... i think we all know that Sony makes pay high prices tor their products. So the price of the motion control will be higher the expected. not to mention that u'll have to buy the PlayStstion Eye with it .
i think sony should sell it all together (PS3 + Arc + PS Eye) so they can penetrate the casual markets. pluse a good promotional campaign so everyone will know about the value of this "Thing"

Even if they come out with some good games for this, I just don't see myself standing in front of my TV for an hour or two at a time. That's fine for 15 minute mini-games, or playing at a party when everyone's drunk, but for a day-in day-out gaming experience, it's not appealing.

seriously... you said "or hands free gaming" you are referring to natal not ARC Sonys motion controls are just that "controlers" we still get to push buttons which I'm vey very happy about. we get the best of both worlds precise motion and the ability to activate many actions/menus with buttons. I'm not a forsure sell because I love my dualshock but I think the ACR can be a great addition to the PS3. f natal, how would you ever play a complex game with just your body, good luck standing the whole time. that will get old fast.
