Square not sure where to take Final Fantasy next

Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada has admitted in an interview with Gamasutra that it would be “difficult to determine” where the company could take the Final Fantasy series next following FFXIII’s launch earlier this year.
Specifically, Wada touched on the subject of whether or not the venerable series should become a ‘new type of game’, noting that although XIII sold well, the reception among fans was something of a mixed bag.
“I think this is a product that was able to meet the expectations for those who know Final Fantasy,” said Wada. “There are all kinds of games around in the market today. Should Final Fantasy become a new type of the game or should Final Fantasy not become a new type of game?
“The customers have different opinions. It’s very difficult to determine which way it should go.”
“Looking at the numbers alone,” Wada continued, “it is pretty good, because we were able to release the latest Final Fantasy in all three markets of Japan, United States, and Europe in a very short period of time, and we were able to reach 5 million units rapidly — and I think this product will grow further.”
“But when it comes to the customers’ reaction to the quality of the game”, he said, “some value it highly and some are not very happy with it.”

What Square need to do is what bands like to do, which is "going back to their roots". If look at what has gotten you this far then you'll see what you need to do to progress and keep the fans happy =)

Everysince Square Soft became Squenix the quality of the games have sucked. We may get one or two bright spots but the rest are zzzzzzzzzzz. Like Sephiroth27 said they need to go back to their roots and stop trying to appeal to the young run and gun players. I don't want Final Fantasy: Call of Duty I want Final Fantasy. Wada needs to take a good long look in the mirror and remember what brought them to prominance and not try to appeal to casual run and gun gamers while alienating his loyal followers.

Take it back to the roots. Look at the Enix branch and see how they treat their DQ game series. Also:
1. Stop that MMORPG crap, don't put those games into the original series, create a spin off if you need to.
2. Give Nobuo Uematsu a call and beg him to work with you again.
3. Have all devs play FF 1-10, because they seem to have forgotten what made those games good

hmmm so there not sure where to take the series now eh.
How about while they are figuring this out they remake 7 for the ps3 (and there is no way I believe the whole "this game will take 10 years to remake" fud they been spreading).

Its really pretty simple.
The only way to progress an RPG is to add much much more interaction with the environments.
Making it a linear @rsed map system is going backwards......it should become a sand box with players, weapons, etc being affected by the environment (sandstorms cause accuracy issues, snow storms decrease turn speed etc) and also having the ability to use the environment.
FF13 went backwards in the eyes of older fans.......just as most games this generation have gone backwards. They put so much emphasis on visuals & forget what makes the gameplay.
Visuals are great, don't get me wrong, but they are terrible if they are at the expense of the gameplay.
I don't know why developers just cannot see these little facts......improve the gameplay.

They just need to focus more on integrating realities of life into the game and not make it so bubbly and happy. Dark is better, becaues when they have those happy moments its going to be more effective emotionally. Its all about contrast...Oh how i would love to work on a final fantasy game. Im a huge fan but they have been screwing up.

What I hated in FFXIII was the lack of NPC, lack of freedom travel-wise (though FF has always been somewhat linear, past games gave better immersion with world map and good map design), boring missions, boring antagonists and the fact that the story didn't have a main protagonist. What kept me playing the game until credits was the entertaining battle system.

I don not care if the graphics are great, good will do. I definitely have to agree with the rest of you that these developers (if they intend to keep making titles called Final Fantasy) they need to take the gameplay back to 1-10 and the world maps of 1-9. The story line was always linear, but they gave you the impression that it was much bigger. Plus you kind of had to find the place you were trying to get to. I personally enjoy random battles and turn-based/time-based battles that are not trying to be an action game. I do like action-rpgs, but I think other companies are better at making those, and Final Fantasy has never been an action-rpg.
I just finished replaying ff1, now I'm playing ff7.

I think Final fantasy should become an RPG again!!! DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHH!!!! Like god! How can square not know where their going with it? to be honest the last great FF game in my opinion was 9. I would shoot for a remake of 7 or maybe do something with 6. Have a game that has choices and multiple endings and deep characters that you care about, Not just some mashed up fancy tight clothed wearing wonder heros. More towns that you can explore and wepons and upgrades and airships and everything that make FF so fun.
