The PlayStation 3 version of sprawling space epic Mass Effect 2 utilizes the same brand-spanking new game engine as next year’s hotly anticipated third instalment, developer BioWare has revealed.
News dropped during the latest episode of the firm’s Blog Podcast, after Mass Effect 2 producer Jesse Houston was asked to divulge what made the PS3 version of the sci-fi sequel so special.
“We've actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and use that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3,” revealed Houston.
"So we took the content and the story and all the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put them in the Mass Effect 3 engine. And that's what we are actually delivering."
Houston also highlighted the importance of Sony’s black behemoth to the trilogy, backed-up by the recent confirmation that Mass Effect 3 will hit PS3 on the same day as its PC and Xbox 360 counterparts in late 2011.
Mass Effect 2 is due out on PS3 in January 2011.

So ME2 and 3 won't be graphically different, but to be honest, I'm happy that they even went out of their way to make the game with their new engine instead of the previous one. Nice job Bioware.

@Fenix, they pretty much went all out to make sure it wasn't a crappy port, fixed it up and even gave it the new engine. All in all, Bioware really did their best for the PS3 and I'm sure the owners of the game on the PS3 will definitely be happy.

I kind of don't own it... but it doesn't keep me from playing it either on my PC. I don't have a 360 (and nor will I ever) so I don't have to worry about that. My suggestion, sell the 360 version for about $10 on eBay and then put it towards the PS3 version. If only you could move the save file over to the PS3 lol.

Well ME2 uses the Unreal Engine 3.5 so I guess they wanted to treat it as an exclusive title for PS3 that's just out a year later than 360 & PC. I guess it's just an extra incentive for PS3 owners who had to wait a whole year to play it on their console. But then again, if it will look just like ME3, then wouldn't add that awe effect when they play ME3 after ME2. It will just look like an expansion.

Since I've never played ME2 on the x360, I wouldn't know the difference. And, of course, there are already graphically superiour games on the PS3, so BioWare has ther work cut out for them. I'm sure there will be all kinds of flame wars, once it's released on the PS3, about which version is better. ;) I'm definately interested in trying the demo, at this point.

Because Bioware went out of their way to spend time on making the port as best as they possibly could, I will go out of my way to purchase this game the day it comes out. I already have this game on my 360 but I now want it for my PS3. These devs have earned my money.

If you're worried about missing ME1, don't be. Good game, yeah, not great. I though it was overrated personally. ME2 on the other hand is phenomenal. Even though I've already played through it on PC, along with all the DLC, I'm temped to get the PS3 version.

If you never played ME1, you won't really miss it. ME2 is a superior game in every way. Once you go ME2, you don't want to go back to ME1.
