The nominees for Best Role-Playing Game of 2010 are...

And the winner is...

XIII is undoubtedly a controversial entry in venerable Final Fantasy series. Towns are essentially non-existent, and the first 15 hours feel like a linear tutorial interspersed with cut-scenes. Eventually, however, the game sheds its linearity and shines. The stylish combat system, which puts players in control of the party leader, is fast-paced and full of subtleties; the world is a stunning array of futuristic cityscapes and lush natural environments; and Masashi Hamauzu's soundtrack is an delightful blend of wandering piano solos and epic string concertos. Best of all, though, the protagonist isn't a whiny little brat -- you'll truly care for Lightning and crew as they battle to save Cocoon. Sure, the writing occasionally borders on campy, but XIII tackles serious thematic concepts like fear and loss with grace. If you have the patience to slog through the beginning, you'll be rewarded with the Best Role-Playing Game of 2010.
And the Community Award goes to...

The community vote for Best RPG of 2010 was very, very tight. Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII clutched 32.0% of the votes, but Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas took the cake with 35.1%. EA's Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening snagged 18.6% of the votes, while Atlus' 3D Dot Game Heroes only managed 8.2%. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, the only PSP game nominated for Best RPG, ended up with 6.2%.

Im glad that atleast the commuity vote didnt go to FFXIII. NV was indeed a great game but as RPGs go i feal dragon age was the best of them all. Why FF XIIII scored such a high vote or the pick of the PSU team i will never be able to work out, the worst selling of any FF title ever and naught but a strate line with a poor plot and unlikable characters stapled on to it.

I thought this was the award for Best RPG of 2010 not the best corridor fighter of 2010. Seriously, FFXIII has no true RPG elements from either JRPGs or WRPGs. The game limits your levelling ability, you can only control one party member and if that one dies it's game over. There is essentially no room for strategy in the fighting, it's just hit x repeatedly and switch classes when you run low on health.
How you people decided it was the best of the best in the RPG genre is so far beyond my comprehension that I am going to have to have a lie down. -

Good choice PSU, its great to see FFXIII getting some love. Fallout NV was a major disappointment to me, what is the point of creating a massive game while not polishing any one particular aspect of it. Everything from presentation to gameplay in Fallout NV was poorly executed.
