Xperia Play costs a ludicrous amount in Europe

The Xperia Play will cost Spaniards an arm and a leg when it arrives in the country on April 1, 2011 — that is, if you value your limbs at €325 euro a piece.

Sony Ericsson Spain today revealed that Xperia Play, commonly referred to as the PlayStation Phone, will cost €649 euro off-contract and unlocked in Spain. Translated to U.S. currency, that works out to approximately $907 USD — though we doubt it’ll retail for this much when it arrives in the United States. Europeans are often shafted on price point compared to America for retail products, particularly video games and their associated technology. Still, with a price that high in Spain, expect to pay at least $750 dollars for an off-contract, unlocked Xperia Play when it arrives in the U.S.

At least the "PlayStation certified" phone comes with six games pre-installed, right? Yes, we know, it still costs a ludicrous amount of money. Not a single carrier has revealed on-contract pricing details, though, so potentially a one or two-year Xperia Play plan could be more affordable.

We’ll have additional updates on price point as soon as we hear more.
