Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono has revealed that fan requests for a new Darkstalkers game have topped the 100,000 mark – but noted it’s still a long way off from the one million milestone that Capcom wants before giving the project the green light.

The last Darkstalkers game released back in 1997, and a series revival has remained at the top of many gamers’ wishlists ever since. Fan requests for a new title reached 5000 back in August 2010.

However, speaking to Eurogamer, Ono-san revealed it’ll take at least 500,000 requests before Capcom bigwigs even consider the prospect of giving a fresh instalment in the franchise the stamp of approval.

"We have to keep on going,” said Ono. "At the moment in Capcom's statistics, I've heard it's [the number of requests] gone over 100,000. But it's far from a million. We need to keep on going."

"One day, if it goes half a million, Capcom may raise its eyebrow a little bit and I could do what I did in London in 2007 when I announced the comeback of Street Fighter.”

The Capcom developer remains optimistic, however, and believes a new Darkstalkers will eventually materialise as long as fan support keeps rolling in.

"In the near future, with your help, it may become true. It's on its way, because we're pretty much where we were with Street Fighter a few years back. So keep it up," he said.
