Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has confirmed that it was forced to pull the plug on PlayStation Network this week as a result of an “external intrusion” – in other words, hackers are indeed to blame for the service’s on-going outage these past few days.
Writing in a message on the U.S. PlayStation Blog, SCEA communications boss Patrick Seybold asserted that the electronics giant is doing all it can to remedy the situation, and promised to keep punters in the loop on future developments.
“An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services,” wrote Seybold.
“In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th.”
“Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience.”
“We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.”
Seybold’s message is the first update we've heard from Sony on the matter since Thursday, when the company was forced to admit that its online service may be down for “days.”
Speculation began to spread like wildfire that the notorious hackers Anonymous were to blame for PSN’s downtime, after the group had previously targeted Sony in relation to legal action the platform holder had taken against other hackers.
While conceding that some its members could have acted on their own accord, however, Anonymous said in a press release yesterday that the group was not responsible for the attacks on PSN, insisting the whole affair is the result of an "internal problem."
Stay tuned for more info as it breaks.

would gladly see these guys humiliated and their lives destroyed, as long as they do their crap in their basement it's illegal but noone suffers from it, now they're attacking the game world and will only reach a goal that is their worst fear : have even less "freedom" as security increases, they're no more than thugs, they'll go to jail, sad as with their tech knowledge they could get a good job

So let me guess. Some weed smoking hacker was so high on the 20th, that hacker decided to invade the servers of PSN and mess it up? Amirite? I could be right. Then, anon hacker says they're not involved. This is a stupid drama. Grow up everyone and get the PSN back up so I can play some online games.

So Error 8007192 was a direct cause of the hack as well?

WE ARE BEING LIED TO!!!!! sONY IS LYING TO US! Ok, so lets play out the scenario. On wednesday Sony has finally said, that there was an "external intrusion". This may be the case but if it was shut down for that purpose then why did we not know a reason for 2 more days. Ok, so this could have been Sony's way of preventing havoc of users freaking out. So lets move on to the next problem. Sony told us the other day that they were aware that the PSN was down, well duh you supposedly shut it down, we find out days later. But, when Sony said they were aware they also said it would be up in 24-48 hours. If you knew the problem 3 days ago now, why is it going to take longer to solve the problem? A lot is going on here and Sony isn't being up front with us. I am not concerned with the fact that the PSN is down for some time now, I'm concerned with the fact Sony is leaving us in the dark. Not being completely up front and honest with it's customers. We now have vague info on the situation. Did the "external intruder" break in just because? I don't think that makes sense. So what was the individual(s) doing? Stealing our Credit Card info? Very possible. Yet they refuse to let us know anything. Sony, I'm starting to get fed up with your lack of caring for your PAYING CUSTOMERS. George Hotz was stealing from you yet you seemed to get in contact with him fairly quickly huh?

Thank you, whoever did this. I got a lot done this week. You gave me back my time. As for why Sony has been slow to reveal what happened: it is because whoever did it, dropped some kind of virus or worm in the system that was compromising more than just access to the network. It was stealing account information and it was doing it through a major hole in the coding of internal system controls.

when it comes to every one being so concerned with there credit card info being in danger i do have pity but, this is exactly why i dont put that kind of info online. everyone always thinks im paranoid but look now. as for the network if it ever comes back up, im gonna unleash almighty mayhem on the poor souls on killzone 3. 20 kill streak here i come!!!!! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do belive Anonmouys when they say they did NOT do it i mean no 1 no\'s who they are so if they wanted to hack Sony or PS3 or PSN or whatever they could do rite now, plus they already had 1 failed attempt on Playstation, it would be stupid to try again and risk your chance of being exposed.
