PSN update: no compensation for PS Plus subscribers, SCEE source reports

An anonymous source close to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has today told PSU that the company will not offer any form of compensation to PlayStation Plus subscribers for the recent PlayStation Network downtime.

PlayStation users have now been offline for six days, with no firm indication of when the service will resume. Though it was always unlikely that users of the PSN would receive some form of compensation, it’s become a hot topic on many forums as players get more agitated with the situation the longer it goes on. If Sony was just to tell the PlayStation community what has happened, that would surely put minds at rest.

Our source says that will never happen and refers to Sony’s terms and conditions which states: “we are not liable for any loss of data, content, function or utility” caused through upgrades or maintenance.

Some developers on the other hand, may well get some financial help from Sony due to loss of revenue from games that it has recently sold on PSN. Open Emotion Studios recently confirmed that Sony will be helping them to re-market its PSN title, Mad Blocker Alpha which launched at the time that the servers went down. We’ve fired an email off to Sony’s PR team for a response, but predictably we have yet to hear a reply.

Sony announced last week that it was slashing the price of PlayStation Plus, offering members the opportunity to buy a 15 month subscription for the price of 12 months.

All I have to say is this, with the PSN being free, there really cannot be any moaning and groaning, While I gather that the Plus users did pay for additional features, that was an option for them, and it was just to get extra goodies at the store. The network is still free, everyone knows that the network sucks, never a stable connection, host migrations dropping people, and sometimes even freezing the whole system up were you have to restart just to get connected again. But again....ITS FREE....what do you expect, can\'t get something from nothing. While that is said, it is a horrible marketing idea for Sony to keep its loyal fans...such as I, in the DARK!!! They should come out and let us know what is really going on, and a better understanding of how long we are going to have nothing to do, I don\'t know about anyone else, but Black Ops right now is my down time, with out it, I don\'t have anything, and again this is because its free to play, and I have no money...but that is getting off topic. Sony needs to step up, take accountablility for their actions, they left the network vulnerable, how else could this have happened, now just let us know how long its going to take for them to fix it.

Dont see why anyone needs compensation.

Free Members: Dont pay to play online,

PS+ members: Pay for discounts, free games, etc. etc. They wilL STILL be there when the service is back up.. so noone really loses anything

Just wondering when they will get it back up and running. I mean it is not the end of the world, but I am getting frustrated with the fact that they are fine just leaving us in the dark about the whole situation. PSN...just let us know when you will be back up and running so you can save yourself the trouble of hearing this from 70,000,000 different people!

Just before I start, I use to have Xbox live until a few months ago, but then turned it off because of the horrible connections, pathetic servers, etc. Especially when I had the PSN working much better and more efficient (I still do not understand why MAG on 256players had no lag in comparison to MW2 on the 360). (PS3 WiFi, 360 ethernet, for those interested)

Anyways, PSN+ is really just free stuff and betas, nothing you can really compensate for since the service is already giving you free stuff  and discounts anyways.

Oh, and someone tell IGN to stop freaking out, its getting irritating. I understand they love their PS3's, but its not the end of the world... Have they not noticed that their Xbox side of things is shrugging this off? For a 360 owner, crashes and such are common place...

Ah well see I did not know that Zombieking, I figured the 360 had a better connection because you had to pay to play online, I would be pretty pissed at that moment if a connection crashed on me and I had to pay to play.  But I don't really care for the graphics on a 360 personally, its just small detail, but for someone who has been an avid xbox and playstation lover his whole life, the 360 really let me down.  Even with this, there is no way I could switch to such a money grubbing corporation like Microsoft, love their OS's though.

Pretty sad that we are in the 21st century and a company as big as Sony is having such a hard time getting its servers back up. What is really bad is that this even happened in the first place, not like computers and the internet just came out.

To add to the problem Sony can not even update its customers worth a damn. In an age when you can talk to just about anyone anywhere and Sony has a problem just putting one update a day up. Lets not forget the updates are totally useless. Sony is looking mighty fail currently.

I am really suprised X-Box has not taken advantage of this situation and crushed Sony. All X-Box would have to do is offer all current Ps3 owners a sweet deal like...Come trade in your ps3 for a brand new X-box and we will also throw in a free game as well......that would kill Sony, game over!

I have never been a big fan of X-Box but at the rate Sony is going, X-Box is starting to look more and more appealing!

    @chopkins229

If your talking about the OS on Xbox, then I like that to. I find PS3's not as good, I wish Sony would update it to be better than Xbox's. But that's the only Xbox advantage I see.... But if your talking about the PC OS, then they're okay. I like Mac better even since I haven't even used it yet either lol. (too expensive)

For ever person that wants to play plastation i will convense 2 people to go with xbox. I paid for the subscription service of DCOnline and they are wasting my time

That wouldn't catch my interest... I\'ll never switch to Xbox. But is this what society has come to nowadays? Can't even go a full week without playing online? What did you do BEFORE PSN or Xbox Live?

@15 You make a valid point dude. If you think that's bad think of how people say when they can't live without their phones or Facebook. I reckon we all should go back to how gamers play together (Multiplayer) ... Have 4 friends around 1 console. Ah, those were the sweet, Good'ol days lol

Not true, actually sony have said that they will come up with a way of working out compensation when psn is back online (probably to cover stuff like plus etc.), from: http://uk.playstation.com/psnoutage

"Q.16     I want my money back (subscription fee, content) since the PSN/Qriocity was not available.

When the full services are restored and the length of the outage is known, we will assess the correct course of action."

I have some discount codes for games (50% off Crystal Defenders w/ Lord of Arcana) on the psn that expire start of may, so they best extend them too if the store isn't back by then...
