PS Vita/PSP philosophy 'basically the same,' says Sony

Sony has revealed it is adhering to the same philosophy with PlayStation Vita that it did with the handheld’s predecessor, the PlayStation Portable.

Speaking to Edge, newly-appointed Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) chief Jim Ryan said that Vita is very much a software-centric device targeted at core gamers. However, its vast array of social connectivity features allows Sony's new portable to differentiate itself from PSP.

"To the extent that PSP targeted the core gamer who was after a good gaming experience, the philosophy is basically the same," said Ryan. "But I think the nature of [Vita] allows us to provide a differentiated gaming experience in a manner that the design of PSP simply did not allow."

"The core principle is to provide the best portable gaming experience possible. It's as simple as that." The executive added that Vita is seen as Sony’s “true digital device,” unlike PSP or PlayStation 2.

PS Vita is due out in Japan this winter, with a western launch following in early 2012.
