Drinkbox Studios, the Toronto-based indie developer known for creating Tales from Space: About a Blob and Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack for PSN and Vita respectively, today announced that its upcoming side-scrolling platformer, Guacamelee, will be gracing both Sony platforms.
Guacamelee is best described – by Drinkbox themselves – as a “Metroid-vania style action-platformer set in a magical Mexican inspired world.” Depending on your taste, that might either sound fantastic or off-putting.
We had the opportunity to check out the game at PAX East, and as we’ve said on the podcast, Guacamelee is fun as hell. If you haven’t heard of it, check out the trailer below. Actually, even if you have, do it anyway.
Consider us stoked. Guacamelee will be funded by Sony’s pub fund, a program that attracts many indie developers to Sony’s digital distribution network. Look forward to the game hitting PSN and Vita in early 2013.

The thumbnail is very clearly a metroid homage (provided Nintendo's lawyers see it that way...) but I didn't see it in the video at all. I wonder how the Chozo statue scene(s) play(s) out.
