The first official details on upcoming horror sequel Dead Space 3 have emerged via the pages of Game Informer (via NeoGAF).

As rumored since mid-2011, the game will indeed take place on an ice planet, and introduces drop-in/drop-out co-op for the first time in the series. The competitive multiplayer from Dead Space 2 has been given the boot, however.

Dead Space 3 sees the return of strategic-dismemberment dynamo Isaac Clarke, who will be teaming up with newcomer John Carver, a fellow engineer from Uxor. Developer Visceral Games has confirmed that playing co-op will allow you to view scenes not included in the single-player mode, though those of you who go solo will “hear everything you need to hear to get the whole story.”

Also new to the table is the appearance of side-missions, as well as all-new enemies (Fodders, Feeders and the Snow Beast), plus a cover system. In addition, you’ll also encounter universal ammo pick-ups and gun-toting baddies in the form of armed Unitologists, plus Isaac can now combine his guns to create unique weapons.

Dead Space 3 is scheduled to ship in February 2013. Expect more details to drop during publisher Electronic Arts’ press conference later today.
