Wii U is a 'potential risk' to PlayStation, admits Sony

Sony has conceded that its PlayStation business may be at risk from Nintendo’s forthcoming Wii U console, but ultimately believes the company has enough quality products to keep punters happy.

Speaking with GI.biz, Jim Ryan, head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), said that at the end of the day, it all comes down to available content – something which Sony is feeling very confident about.

“It’s obviously a potential risk but we feel really good about our content,” said Ryan. “Obviously, it comes down to content. There are people who buy gadgets for the sake of gadget, but that’s pretty niche.”

“We feel good about our line-up that we showed at E3. We’re very excited about publishing it. We’ve got 30 million (hardware sales target) for this year, it’s a big number but we’ve got the tools to out and deliver that,” he added.

Elsewhere, the executive also trumpeted Sony’s continued push for new IP this far into PS3’s lifecycle, highlighting the likes of Beyond: Two Souls from Quantic Dream among others.

"It becomes economically easier if you've got an installed base of 64 million," he said. "Making that financial commitment to this sort of thing is a lot easier than if you've got 6 million." We're certainly not complaining about the likes of David Cage's Beyond and Naughty Dog's The Last of Us being on the horizon.”

Im growing annoyed of your titles, more often than not, they're out of context.

Sony shouldn't be worried. I think the WiiU will be Nintendo's next Gamecube. Although I loved my gamecube, it just didnt last very long with the good games coming out. The focus got put towards Xbox and PS2. I think the Wii left a sour taste with a lot of gamers not offering something for them so they regret picking it up or not at all. I was disapointed with the games that made me purchase a Wii. Anything that could of got me excited for a WiiU hasnt been announced so I wont be getting one. If I do, it will be when the next console generation is ending. ;p

Agree with 1; this is out of context.
Besides, Sony couldn't say "Wii U is a piece of crap, no worries here", they have to give a polite answer we all know how that works.

The only real threat that Wii U has for Sony is their controller...oh wait...Well, I guess there all those 2D mario games. Watch out Sony! If you think The Last Of Us can stand against a 2D Wii era mario game, you have another think coming. :D

You have actually had to edit a single sentence to get your headline!

Just go the whole hog and make garbage up, PSU.  I guess that's what you're good at.

I don't think they have anything to be worried about. The Wii only led the console race for 5 years, there is still a long way to go!/s

It's nothing Sony should be too worried about. I was severely let down by the Wii, it was way too casual. I will without a doubt be buying the PlayStation 4 no matter what, whereas Nintendo have got a lot of work to do to win me over and encourage me to buy a Wii U. I own a good 40 games for my PS3, plus HD collections. I got my Wii a year before my PS3, and only have 5 games on it. And I haven't even played them all. The fact is, as a hardcore gamer, Sony have already won me over. Nintendo however, has lost me, and have a lot of encouraging to do. I'm definitely open to the concept of it, I may well be won over if Nintendo prove it's worth my time. But I'm not gonna be forking money out again for a console only for there to be 5 good games on it. Whereas, as I said, I will be getting a PS4 regardless.
