Sony: PS Vita not in need of re-evaluation

Sony has insisted there is no need to re-evaluate its strategy for PlayStation Vita despite lagging sales.

The handheld launched in Japan in December 2011 and despite positive first-week sales has struggled to maintain momentum. Western numbers are largely being kept under wraps, though U.K. sales are believed to be pretty underwhelming at 100,000 units.

However, speaking to MCV, Andrew House, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), said a re-think isn’t on the cards. Rather, the platform holder instead needs to place more emphasis on PS Vita’s defining features.

“I don't think there has been a need for a re-look," he said. "We are in what is a very competitive space. I think we need to put more emphasis on the kinds of experiences that define and differentiate Vita. That is always going to be one of its objectives. But there needs to be a reinforcement on that."

"But also, because it is for us the first truly networked portable device in our proprietary gaming space, there is a need to think more broadly about the implications of that for our business model, and to think about how the consumer wants to acquire content.”

House also observed that digital sales of PS Vita software have been rather impressive.

"20 per cent of Vita content is being downloaded. That tells you that the consumer has an appetite in this space. It just creates a need for us to think through our business model in a broader way than before,” he added.

Many industry commentators have called for Sony to drop the price of PS Vita to boost sales, echoing a similar move to Nintendo with the 3DS last year.

No need to re-evalulate? They said the same thing about the PSPGo...

    http://www.play.tm/wire/2893763/scee-psp-go-sales-in-line-with-expectations/

    "

In a recent interview, Sony have said that the PSP Go has been in-line with there expectations for the platform. PSP-3000 sales also increased with the release of PSP Go with overall PSP hardware increasing more than 100% in the UK.

"PSPgo has performed in line with our expectations, driving 100 per cent incremental volume for the category and has benefited the broad PSP portfolio with PSP-3000 also enjoying a big lift."

"PSP software sales also having been a standout with both new releases GT PSP and FIFA 10 performing well."

And we all know how well the PSPGo is doing right now.....

I think if developers aren't making profit for the game they make, they will complain to SONY about the PS Vita hardware sales. They will want Sony to have a price cut for it so it could boost hardware sales, so more consumers can buy it and buy their game. I think SONY needs to re-evaluate the PS Vita because its not exceeding expectations like Nintendo's DSi or 3DS. PSP Go! was a failure and it was bound to found because it was too small and it was a slide out without a keyboard. The only thing good about the PSP Go! was internal flash memory, that is something the PS Vita lacks. PS Vita needs internal flash memory and a larger memory for their memory cards.. internal flash memory should be a choosing between at least 16GB - 128GB and memory cards should be at least 16GB - at least 128GB but 128GB is still at an expensive price so it probably won't get cheaper until another 2 - 5 years or so depending on their business. SONY's PS Vita is lacking. I love the PS Vita, there is no doubt about it but lack of good games and all.. its totally lacking. I want to own a PS Vita but just not for $250.. I am not complaining about it. I just don't think its at a proper price point with all that lacking and restrictions.

Honestly the system is expensive for a handheld device but for the price it is doing pretty good, if it gets a major price drop like the 3ds it will surely have a huge spike in sales in tje long term. Lets just hope it those nt take them too long for a price drop

Honestly, the system is not expensive for a handheld device of its spec. Not even a little bit.

This hand up on price is just ridiculous.  It is the most powerful portable gaming device on the market, with the best control schemes and screen to boot.

It's practially like having a home console in your hands!  In fact, it is worth nothing that this thing runs rings round the Wii in terms of sheer performance, never mind the 3DS!

It's all about games. Look at what person4 golden did for sales. Imagine what a Monster Hunter title would do for the system.

You can hold press conferences, but if you don't release games, your tough talk isn't worth anything.
