Katsuhiro Harada, producer on Namco Bandai’s Tekken franchise, has moved to reassure fans that the beat-‘em-up will never charge for post-launch content in regards to key gameplay elements.

Harada-san has long maintained that, providing the decision remains in his hands, Tekken games won’t require punters to pay for DLC that includes extra techniques, characters and stages.

This philosophy is in strike contrast to Street Fighter developer Capcom, who have frequently charged for numerous post-launch content including extra playable characters.

“When you look at DLC, whether paid or free, a lot of titles have it on the disc, it’s not that unusual,” he told Eurogamer. “I’ve been saying that, at least for Tekken, regarding techniques, characters and stages, these three things won’t be charged for, even if they are DLC.”

The Tekken boss remains committed to his stance on DLC, despite the fact he is continually being pulled in for discussion on the matter with his bosses at Namco.

“Actually this is something my bosses have been asking me for quite a while now – what are our plans for DLC? How much money can we make? They are a company, obviously, in it to make money,” he said. “So it’s something I’m continually asked even now. But I haven’t changed my stance. If you’re making a fighting game, all of the elements necessary to enjoy it should be on the disc, or should at least be available for free.”

Tekken Tag Tournament 2, the latest entry in the venerable fighting franchise, is due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2012.
