5 games that are better on PS3 than Xbox 360

In terms of multiplatform output, PlayStation 3 has had a bit of a bumpy ride. During the console’s infancy, it became widely known that PS3’s notoriously tricky architecture proved something of a headache for game developers, resulting in some pretty shoddy third-party ports. They weren’t horrendous, but let’s face it; if you took a third-party game from a few years ago, chances are it’d look and play better on Xbox 360. However, while it’s been a bit of rocky road, things have changed – and for the better.

These days, Sony’s black behemoth is packing some serious contenders in the third-party space. Years of arduous tinkering with the hardware has resulted in some impressive titles, and more importantly, ones that are actually superior – no matter how subtle – to their Xbox 360 counterpart. It’s a highly contentious topic we know, but the folks at PSU.com decided to brave the subject and list five titles on PS3 we feel have the edge over their 360 counterparts.

Fancy letting off some steam or have a few other games in mind that you feel run better on PS3 than 360? Then the comments section at the bottom of this article is your new best friend. Get stuck in.

BIOSHOCK

An early gem this, BioShock finally turned up on PS3 in 2008, and looked rather lush to say the least. The Xbox 360 version is a stonkingly good-looking game, but somehow port handlers 2K Marin and Digital Extreme managed to spruce up the PS3 version to make it look even better. No, we’re not talking enhanced visuals in the traditional sense – 2K admitted the games are identical in this respect – but thanks to the addition of widescreen support and higher-resolution cutscenes, BioShock does sparkle that little bit much more on PS3. In addition, gamers have the added incentive of picking up the ‘definitive’ copy of the game. BioShock PS3 not only includes the original in all its glory, but furthermore, packs exclusive extra content in the shape of the Survival difficulty, Challenge Rooms and Trophy/PlayStation Home support. Still haven’t explored Rapture yet? Then make sure you plump for the PS3 version.

MORTAL KOMBAT

One word: Kratos. Yep, this might be a tenuous example of why the PS3 version is better, but you can’t deny the addition of an exclusive character isn’t tempting. God of War’s perpetually-pissed off anti-hero makes his cross-game debut in the PS3 version of Mortal Kombat, giving it a distinct advantage over the 360 release, which sadly lacks its own brawler. Of course, this is a subjective thing; you may love Kratos and would plump for the PS3 release without even thinking about it, or you may not give a toss about the bald brute at all. Either way, Mortal Kombat arrives on Sony’s flagship home console (and PS Vita, for that matter) with an exclusive fighter, and that puts this version firmly in the ‘plus’ column as far as we’re concerned. And the best part is? Kratos is actually a solid combatant, and his moves have translated admirably well to the MK plane. Plus, those finishers are just BRUTAL…

BRINK

Brink was a bit like marmite – you either loved it, or hated it. Regardless, the PS3 version is technically slightly more robust than the 360 release, especially when it comes to frame rates. Yep, Brink runs locked at 30 fps on Sony’s latest telly box, but on Microsoft’s machine the game is prone to dipping to 25 fps now and then. Furthermore, the PS3 version was devoid of visual hiccups such as screen tearing, and above all, boasted significantly better loading times than the 360 version; nearly twice as fast, according to reports. No, Brink is hardly the best-looking game on current home consoles, but performance wise it comes out chugging along much better on Sony’s platform.

PORTAL 2

Well, it was hardly going to be The Orange Box was it? Valve’s new-found love for Sony’s telly box – marked by Gabe Newell’s appearance at E3 2010 – was shocking to say the least, but the results speak for themselves. Portal 2 is a cracking game regardless of the platform, but we have to concede that the PS3 version pips its Xbox 360 counterpart to the post. Why? Well, it all comes down to implementation of steamworks. With this cross-play feature, PS3 gamers can team up with PC players to tackle the cerebrally-stimulating highlights of the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. Aside from that, both versions are identical, but the fact the PS3 release boasts an expanded multiplayer audience is a nice bonus.

L.A. NOIRE

It’s a well-known fact that Team Bondi’s acclaimed crime caper was originally conceived as a PS3-exclusive. As such, the game was made from the ground-up on Sony’s black box, and became the lead platform once the title made the transition to Xbox 360. As such, the 1940s thriller does boast a few minor advantages over its 360 counterpart when heavily scrutinized. For starters, there are some noticeable cosmetic differences, with the PS3 version boasting better draw distance and no screen tearing to speak of. The most obvious advantage, however, is the fact the game comes packed on a single Blu-ray disc. This inherently removes the trouble of having to swap discs, which 360 owners are lumbered with as L.A. Noire comes on three DVDs. Back at release, L.A. Noire also supported exclusive content for the PS3 release, though this has since been assimilated into the Game of the Year Edition.

I love my PS3 and there is no doubt there have been some bad ports but why make an article about this. It comes across kind of desperate and defensive.

     @4

It's all true, if highly selective.

I read Eurogamer's Digital Foundry for the "Face-off' series of analysis.  They look at stuff like screen tear, frame rate, load times, ambient occlusion, particle effects, draw distance, etc. There's probably a couple hundred comparisions.

The PS3 used to get beat all the time in the early days.  Today it still loses more than it wins but it's much closer.

One has to wonder how many year it takes before we stop blaming developers and calling them lazy?  It's been almost 6 years, when do we say "this is the result as history has shown"?

the question is what if these games were PS3 exclusives? the quality would be awesome far from what they are and yeah I'm a fanboy actually a quality fanboy and I have found in games like GOD OF WAR, Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavy Rain, Infamous, Uncharted, Demon's Souls, Heavenly Sword ... all the things I need as a gamer.

Arkham Asylum is better on PS3 yes, the camera was much better than the 360 version, but even if it was the other way around, PS3 version had the Joker maps making it an auto win.

    Arkham City is equal.

the ps3 version of bioshock came out much later didn't it? of course it would be better.

mortal kombat isn't better it just has another character.

No one liked brink. and anyone who plays a game that dips to 25 FPS and isn't a moron will tell you its hardly noticeable.

the ability to play with PC people with portal 2 isn't much of a reason to get it on PS3 over xbox. especially when you consider party chat.

few people complained about LA noires disk changing. the multi disk part was more of a selling point. the disk change places were in such good positions that it wasn't a big deal to change disks. LA noire isn't really considered that good of a game though as it was very boring. but still, once again it didn't make much sense to get it on PS3 over xbox.

FF13 is better on PS3, hands down(but no one liked that game), so is tales of vesperia but sadly that never released for PS3 in NA so might as well throw that out too =.

batman arkam city is smoother on 360.

Next gen it will be a lot better. as PS4 will not use the cell processor.. so the multiplatform games will probably be very close.

Does Oblivion ring a bell? PS3's ver had less bugs that plagued the 360's ver. The PS3 ver ran extremly smooth, with hardly any issues.

I would think the obvious reason that MK is better on PS3 is the god-awful d-pad on the 360. I primarily use my 360 and this was enough to sway me to my dusty PS3 on that specific title.

@8 @curtis isabell stop hating cuz they might b right ur sounding like a fanboy to me. if bioshock came out later on ps3 it doesnt mean they polished it up more cuz they arent owned by sony and if they were bioshock would b playstation exclusives.__as for mortal kombat yea it is better of ps3 simply just cuz u get more not better just more. this article isnt on how just graphics and performance statistics prove but on content aswell.__then theres brink. a game that is equal on both consoles and yes majority of ppl wouldnt even tell the difference in frame rates but fact is its still slightly better on ps3 solemly for the fact since there is nothing else it can be compared to hence graphics etc. __portal is better on ps3 bcuz u get a more massive online multiplayers cross-game experience who cares about xbox party chat if your playing it on ps3 ull still b talkn to ppl ur playn with online bcuz ur on the same game.__just cause LA. noire was boring to u doesnt mean its boring to everyone else and majority of ppl wish it would b on just 1 disc regardless if by having multi-disc and having to make it flawless some ppl still find it annoying but when is having a game multi-disc a selling point last i heard ppl only want 1 disc so in this case LA noire is better on ps3.__as for next gen its still pointless in the multiplatform matter as always most games r equal. i wouldnt b surprised if sony used a juiced upeven more powerful cell processor due to its state of the art emotion chip but it would b cheaper for sony to just use Nvidia graphics processor but who knows since technology is vast in technological performances._

@5 i am not sure you have any idea what u r talking about, the frame rate and particles effects have always been much better on the ps3 for example tekken 6 which had no edge enhancement on the xbox 360 because of its low storage discs, also tomb raider underworld(although its not a very solid game) the character actually stands under the boat but is not shaded, and the details can be hardly seen i mean how retarded is that!and the games show higher contrast on the ps3 i think that is a 1-0

WTF If I remember BioShock came out and looked awful at first because the textures where nowhere near that of the 360 version and 2K Marin had to release a texture patch with was about 600mb if I am not mistaken to correct it. I remember being on this very forum with many complaining about the poor textures overt he 360 version and there was eventually a patch to correct it so how it came up in the top 5 is beyond me.
