John Carmack apologizes for RAGE issues, including bad ending and poor marketing

Incredible visuals, visceral gunplay, long installations - all things one might associate with id Software's RAGE. Not often associated with RAGE are apologies and regret, but that's exactly what id co-founder John Carmack brought to the stage for today's QuakeCon 2012 keynote address.

Speaking to the gathered crowd of journalists and industry enthusiasts, Carmack immediately came forth with criticism and genuine reflection about the game. He first expressed his disappointment with the ending, before going on to state that the PC version in particular was very poorly handled in terms of driver support. Furthermore, he acknowledged that the world of RAGE was essentially a shell with little in terms of the interaction many players were expecting.

Player expectations were also something Carmack feels could have been handled better. Speaking about id's silence on DOOM 4 details, he referenced consumer confusion during RAGE's development and poor marketing as the source of lessons learned. "The messaging on RAGE probably wasn't all it should have been," said Carmack, who believes pre-release comparisons made with Borderlands were unwarranted but perhaps the fault of id Software, who fell short of distinguishing the two.

Thankfully, Carmack's keynote wasn't all so disheartening. He also talked at length about id Software's decision to cease all iOS development and the fact that id Tech 4 is now a viable engine for PlayStation Vita. Futhermore, the majority of staff are in full production on DOOM 4, while others polish the forthcoming DOOM 3 BFG Edition.

Let us know what you think of Carmack's apologies in the comments below, and stay tuned to PSU.com for more on all things id Software, including DOOM 4.

Pft...too little too late. I dont think I can ever forgive him for these issues that render the game damn near unplayable at times nor the terrible ending after I was so looking forward to this game for years! Ridiculous...

Jk. I have never played this game. And never will.

    I was so entusiast.

He was making announcements on the 'IMPORTANCE OF DLC' contents for RAGE.

I had no tecnichal issues (PC) and fully played the game twice and coop missions with a friend.

But you can't stop thinking that it is an UNFINISHED game put on release, fed with hopes of FUTURE CONTENT.

    I AM ANGRY.

and WHAT ABOUT PREY 2? That awesomeness shown in the long cinematic trailer, where's gone?

Now they're releasing that DISHONORED that wasn't even developed with their OWN ENGINE, but a modified UNREAL ENGINE 3, and apart from that

BETHSEDA = Single Player oriented games

and they expect us to BUY IT?

FALSE PROMISES that's what is all about.

I really got into this game bought the comics but sadly this game was not good at all. The high res textures loaded embarrassingly slow, the game wasnt as "deep" as expected and most importantly the ending was the worst thing Ive ever seen!

Pros-Gameplay was actually solid. Shotguns were awesome!

    Cons-EVERYTHING ELSE!

So what is his excuse now?
He's always blaming things and others.

Rage was a beautiful game, and I'll admit it was fun, however the pop-in was horrendous - as #6 said, having to wait for the high-resolution textures to load embarrassingly slowly; it was ridiculous, despite having what I believe was an 8GB install? The gameplay was fun, I'm not denying that, but it was very lacking, and deceptively linear. There could have been a lot more in this game.

Having said that, I would most likely buy a sequel or any of the rumoured DLC for this game, but they definitely need to step things up.

Oh and yeah, as everyone has said, the ending was atrocious. I won't ruin it for anyone, but a 5 second cutscene with no explanation or any form of story whilst also not quite being able to work out if it was a cliffhanger or not was not acceptable.
