The planned movie adaptation of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune has hit yet another road block this week, as it has emerged that director Neil Burger has reportedly left the project.

Burger was the second director to sign up for the action-adventure flick, based on the hugely-popular PlayStation 3-exclusive franchise by Naughty Dog. However, Variety claims he’s no longer attached to the movie.

Originally David O. Russell was due to direct the film, which would have featured Mark Wahlberg in a major role and a plot that centred on a Sopranos-like family of treasure hunters.

Sony Pictures wasn’t too keen on the idea though, and O. Russell exited the project back in early 2011. Now, following Burger’s departure, the company has opted against nominating a new director and the script is in the process of being re-written by National Treasure masterminds Marianne and Cormac Wibberley.

Burger’s departure is quite disappointing considering he apparently planned to adhere close to the source material, and picked up the backing of developer Naughty Dog to boot.
