The NPD Group has divulged U.S. sales figures for open-world actioner Sleeping Dogs, confirming the United Front Games title moved 172,000 units in its opening month of August.

As reported by Joystiq, the figure covers physical sales only, and so does not include the PC release, which received a digital-launch only.

As reported last week on PSU.com, the undercover cop adventure was bested by THQ’s Darksiders II, which topped the U.S. software charts last month.

This is in strike contrast to the U.K. however, where Sleeping Dogs topped the charts for a number of weeks, with Darksiders II not even getting a sniff of the Top Three.
