PlayStation 3 has eclipsed five million unit sales in the U.K. since its launch in March 2007, Sony Computer Entertainment UK has announced.
The milestone comes hot on the heels of the release of the PS3 Super Slim SKU, which is significantly smaller and lighter than the original 60GB launch model. In addition, it also replaces the slot-loading drive of previous hardware with a sliding disc cover.
PS3 Super Slim is available in the U.K. in two flavours: 500GB and 12GB, the latter of which will hit retail shelves tomorrow.
“This is another historic moment for the PlayStation brand, and something I’m incredibly proud of. I’d like to thank all of our consumers, retailers and 3rd party partners for helping us achieve this figure, and look forward to continued success,” commented SCE UK’s Fergal Gara.
This holiday season Sony will be releasing a number of major software, including Wonderbook: Book of Spells, LittleBigPlanet Karting and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.
Looking to the New Year and beyond, PS3 has a stellar software line-up on the horizon in the shape of exclusives such as The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls and God of War: Ascension.
