SEGA has revealed that a series of new Sonic the Hedgehog titles will be released in 2013.

Speaking with Toys ‘n’ Playthings, Sissel Henno, SEGA’s European head of brand licensing, confirmed the Blue Blur would see a number of digital releases, plus a brand new boxed outing to boot.

“Over the next year there will be a big focus on the expansion of [Sonic licensed] toy distribution across Europe. Similarly, we will also be growing the apparel, publishing and stationary categories,” he said.

“We will have several new digital titles launching as well as a new boxed game, so there will be plenty of opportunities to link marketing campaigns across games and merchandise.”

Sonic recently celebrated his 20th anniversary and to mark the occasion SEGA released Sonic Generations and Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II. Both attempted to recreate the classic 2D-platforming antics of old to mixed results from critics and fans alike.

Will SEGA ever get it right? Let us know in the comments section below.
