Bugs and Glitches in Assassin's Creed III: Enough is enough

Assassin’s Creed III is Ubisoft’s most ambitious entry in the series to date, and after spending a couple of hours with the game it’s not hard to see why. Featuring a sprawling open-world to explore, improved combat and a brand new engine, the game dwarfs its predecessors in terms of sheer scale and technical "oomph."

Yet bizarrely for a game that has endured three years of development, it’s easily the buggiest Assassin’s Creed game yet. This is particularly odd considering the fact previous games had considerably less time in the oven, and while not completely free of technical blemishes, performed far more consistently than Connor’s American adventure.

Things were so bad that Ubisoft had to cobble together a day-one patch for the sequel – and even then it didn’t iron out all the creases. Bugs and glitches vary from amusing to the slightly irritating, including bears walking through solid cliff faces, NPCs failing to trigger specific events, being able to open doors while on the roof above, game crashes, floating guns, choppy frame rate and more.

Why did the game ship with all these bugs? More importantly, how is it that a game that has endured such an arduous development cycle could contain more issues than annualized offerings such as Brotherhood and Revelations? Evidently, there’s always a pressure on publishers to deliver the product on its projected ship date, and Assassin’s Creed III is no exception. However, that shouldn’t excuse shipping such a sloppy product.

As mentioned, even after the patch PS3 users are still reporting many bugs. Some users are reporting instances of challenges becoming unbeatable. It’s a shame too, as the game could have been far more memorable than the buggy mess we received at launch. It’s also contradictory to Ubisoft’s pledge to deliver quality experiences – especially in an annualized series like Assassin’s Creed – to basically rush a game to market fully aware of the amount of niggles that still exist. Delays are never an easy pill to swallow, but surely quality would win the day in the long run?

How do you feel, PSU readers? Do you think we deserve better treatment of the triple-A sequels we're investing in? Or would you rather play the game sooner with a host of bugs? Let us know in the comments section below.

Great game but the bugs really hurt it.

Had one that stoppd my horse dead like there was a wall, but there wasnt since I can run around fine on foot. Another where all I could do was counter, but even then I couldnt counter-kill for some reason.

Got a few others but I cant fully recall them.

I don't understand this hypocrisy in video games. With Black Ops 2 full of worthwhile issues right now, AC3 & even Skyrim. These bugs are plagued throughout. How come in all honesty, it didn't effect the score? How come we aren't being harsh with how the gaming publications handle these events? Give them mediocre scores. Don't let this ignorance keep happening and then complain about how unfinish the product is

Totally agree with Logamus_Prime, all the scores are over exaggerated especially for AC3. Let alone the bugs and glitches, but the storyline, useless side missions and the general use of the menu compared to the previous versions are degraded. It is like AC3 was made by a totally different team.

extremely glad i read this, ive been wrestling with the idea of buying this AC. Never owned an AC before but have played the others and felt like they were just repetitive and boring. Good to know this is no different (from comments) and it's glitchy to boot.

Stop being retarded your never going to get a game that is completely glitch free, I understand the frustration that people have but I think u all just go over the top with attacking developers about releasing an unfinished product when clearly they would probally never get round to releasing games if they insisted on ironing out every single last glitch or bug. AC3 was amazing in my opinion even though I also encountered some glitches like the invisible wall and floating gun but they weren't a hindrance to me at all and more amusing than anything....these developers of AAA games do amazing work and I think we should give them about more credit. Do u think GTA 5 will be released glitch free? I very much doubt it, I'm expecting and always will do with games. Now if every game was released with game breaking glitches then fair enough but there not so jus lay off abit.

@7 so what your saying in a scenerio like bethesdia and fallout new vegas DLC, or with skyrim... that the glitches in those that make it practically unplayable (i.e. extreme frame rate drops) are acceptable because we should understand that games aren't glitch free? Thats retarded, yea games will glitch, they always have, but in past generations AAA titles had glitches you had to work on perfectly to exploit/recreate... now EVERYONE with the game experiences these major game hindering glitches... and once again, we're suppose to just say "ok thats cool, it's expected that some glitches will be here, might as well ruin the game"

The real problem is the developer and people like you. When people over look and let problems slide then developers get lazy and dont care to iron out all the problems, and why should they if no ones going to complain. But if it starts being publized more, that these glitches are there and should be found unacceptable, then the pressure is put back on the developer to fix these problems before the consumer has to deal with them. We're the ones who should be in control, and we have the power to be... by not letting those problems slide. We pay them. If we refuse to buy the product until its *generally* glitch free, and that means major glitches that easily arise. Then they will be forced to fix those problems from day one. and not this "day one" update BS either.

The Game actually just crashed on me . I had very high expectations for thus game, and i tolerated the little glitches because some of them where actually kind of amusing. However while raiding fort washington in the game my screen all of the sudden turned purple and there is a horrible noise being produced. I try to exit out of the current sequence only to find the same exact thing except blue when i returned to Desmond. This was a fantastic game and im very upset that i wont be able to finish it on my current saved file. Overall I am very disappointed that ubisoft would let this game go with so many problems. If anybody has had the same issue or has any idea how to reolve it , please help

shit i got AC3 with my ps3 bundle any of you went to do a homestead mission and the screen goes to that white loading screen but never loads. Now my screen is all white but you can still hear connor running and fighting in the backround. Plus you can still get into the start and select menus? Im hoping this is a common glitch, i dont really car about the game per say i like it, not as much as 1 and 2 for xbox, but its still pretty neat. I just want to make sure that the 300 dollar playstation i just bought isnt malfunctioning before i can take it back

Started the game last week and luckily, well, apparently with this mammoth patch Ubisoft are supposed to have released. All I can say is that I can still see many glitches/bugs although they are minor and God only knows what people were experiencing without the patch when the game was first released?! I'll give you this game in one, polite word: Unfinished. To give the game it's due Assassins Creed 3 has the potential to be the best of the lot in terms of story and outright gaming potential but I find it shocking and somewhat insulting to expect people to pay full price for such a buggy mess. I'll still work through it as fortunately the game is big enough for you to forgive some minor flaws. Even if at certain times it is like playing a game that's not even from the same franchise.

I just hope Ubisoft can return to themselves for the next installment and deliver the kind of quality we know they can.
