The scriptwriters behind the upcoming movie adaptation of God of War have revealed Sony has OK’d the pair to rewrite Kratos’s story if deemed necessary.

Chatting with Shock Till You Drop, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan also said that Sony is keen to avoid the film turning into a mere knock-off of Clash of the Titans and the Immortals.

“Those movies can inform the God of War to step in a more bold direction. Not to join those ranks, but to stand head and shoulders apart like other reinventions have done within that genre. The satisfying element is to look at those movies as a commentary on the genre and now say something different,” commented Dunstan.

“Sony games, you think they’d be sacred about the origin story and all of that, but they were encouraging us to make it different from those movies and if that means going in dramatic shifts, they were cool of it. And they’re involved,” Melton added.

Details on the God of War flick are thin on the ground, though early reports indicate that it will go down the origins route in a similar vein to Batman Begins.

As for Kratos’s videogame antics, he’ll be returning for another bloodbath outing in the PlayStation 3-exclusive prequel God of War: Ascension in March 2013.

a movie is different from a video game, in a game you "live" the story, in a movie you see it unfold

as long as the "spirit" is faithful and the character is the one you like, it can't be prevented to have some changes to fit a 2 hour movie

Make logical changes, Explain the details that matter discard the rest. The question is whether these writers can be trusted to know which is which. GoW is like a total deconstruction of greek mythos, take the character and run rip shod through established tropes the way the games did because that's what we're hoping for, not just a re-skin of the \"Release the krakken!\" movies... although it might be pretty funny if someone did say that ironically.

Now just change the main character and the name of the film and I'll be happy!

Just make the movie. It doesn't need that many changes at all, the storyline is great. Just make the movie, its been 8 years in the making jeez, enough already.
