Capcom’s cult Vamp brawler Darkstalkers is finally getting its time in the spotlight again early next year, with the release of Darkstalkers: Resurrection. Combining two entries in the retro-tastic series – Nightwarriors and Darkstalkers 3 – the digital bundle offers a chance for fans to relive these 90s gems while also giving the franchise a chance to enter the mainstream consciousness again after a lengthy hiatus.
More importantly however, they are no doubt being released to test the waters for a potential series revival. Series creator Yoshinori Ono, of Street Fighter fame, has expressed keen interest in bringing his idiosyncratic fighting franchise back from the dead, and fans have been petitioning for years now to see a new game. However, there hasn’t been enough interest to convince Capcom bigwigs to take a punt on the series – not yet, anyway.
There hasn’t been an update on the situation in a while yet, but back in March 2011, Ono-san did reveal that the petition had amassed 100,000 signatures. Apparently, to make Capcom bat an eye-lid, it would need to total half a million or so. Still, with Resurrection being used to gauge consumer interest, there’s every chance that we’ll get a new game if enough people flock to the retro bundle.
Why should you care though? Well, this is Ono-san we’re talking about. He’s the god father of fighting games, and has the pedigree to back it up. Aside from the older Street Fighter titles, he successfully revived the franchise after a series lull with the brilliant SFIV, and we’d love to see his talents put to use in a slightly more…unconventional brawler such as Darkstalkers.
We fancy seeing something a little different from the Street Fighter maestro. After all, Capcom has pretty much milked SFIV for all it’s worth, and while a fifth game is inevitable, it would be great to see a revival of Darkstalkers while retro is certainly becoming a popular pastime on the likes of PSN and XBLA.
Darkstalkers: Resurrection is due out in March 2013.
