The Last of Us could have one of the best multiplayer modes in years

Earlier this week, developer Naughty Dog confirmed that its upcoming post-apocalyptic romp The Last of Us would feature a multiplayer mode of some description. This was met with some trepidation from gamers, as the subject of multiplayer being shoe-horned into a largely single-player experience has been a highly contentious issue for the last few years. Just look at Dead Space 2, Mass Effect 3 and Assassin’s Creed and you’ll see what we’re talking about.

However, while the concern is justified, we think that The Last of Us could provide one of the most unique and engaging multiplayer experiences on PlayStation 3. For one, Naughty Dog promises it won’t compromise the single-player, and we trust them; Uncharted 2 and 3 are a testament to how the studio is able to craft a thrilling campaign and supplement the action with a compelling multiplayer. We think the same case will definitely apply for The Last of Us.

Given the backdrop of Joel and Ellie’s adventure, we can imagine it will be more than just a simple shoot-‘em-up affair. PSU.com would like to see something built around the concept of survival; how about two teams, one comprised of human scavengers and the other Fungas-infected monstrosities? Uncharted 3 had a great template to work from, so we fully expect some bread-and-butter events such as Death Match, Team Death Match etc to show their face. However, Naughty Dog is sure to offer something to differentiate The Last of Us from its treasure-hunting stable mate.

Survivors competing against other survivors would make for quite a compelling take on the traditional gun battles. Instead of having copious amounts of ammunition and supplies, players would have to scavenge for essentials, which ties in nicely with the core fundamentals of the single-player campaign. Careful planning and stealth would ensure victory over the other team, making for a more cerebral experience than your by-the-numbers blaster. More action-oriented modes could also be implemented, such as defending safe houses from an opposing team or infected, or having a pair of infected attempt to pass on the fungal virus onto a team of survivors, while the human side has to wipe them out before everyone becomes infected.

Of course, these are just some of the ideas we have for multiplayer; Naughty Dog is sure to surprise us and we have every faith that they’ll deliver an online experience just as memorable as Uncharted 3.

The Last of Us is due out exclusively on PS3 on May 7, 2013.

I'll have to play it to believe it. Sure, all the stars are aligned for a killer-app multiplayer mode that supplements strong singleplayer, but it's been that way with other games, too, that ended up with great MP modes but fell just short of those generation-defining results (MGS4, LBP).

This isn't to say I don't hope it turns out differently for TLoU, though. The game is looking absolutely fantastic in every aspect.

The Last of Us will be Naughty Dog's third title to feature multiplayer. So I see no reason why they wouldn't get it right, whatever it is.

What if for online, there's a mode where you actually invade other people's game DARK SOUL's style and play as a bandit trying to hunt Joel and Ellie. Mind blown.

"Uncharted 2 and 3 are a testament to how the studio is able to craft a thrilling campaign and supplement the action with a compelling multiplayer." I guess we will have to disagree on that point, as I thought they were alright at best. Nothing there to keep me coming back.

What I would really like to see in this game, is local and online co-op. I miss the days of being able to play with a friend in person rather than only online. I also think that this would be an amazing game to do it in. Hopefully everything turns out great, always rooting for Naughty Dog.

not every game needs a multi player, to me if you want to make a game iconic for this generation make it a great single player to where no one would talk about the multiplayer. i cant wait for this game. . . obviously if they do have a multiplayer zombies vs human mode ,  or a third person zombie wave mode or you can switch to first person mode  by hitting R3.   :P i need to go preorder it

@Tasados. It won't be on PC because this is Sony's way of getting people to buy more PS3s with great exclusives, I've seen countless people on Youtube say they bought a PS3 for this very game. Naughty Dog is owned by Sony, and would not be allowed to port this to PC. Also, nobody is going to take that petition seriously if it is written that badly.

Don't even limp the multiplayer of Assassin's Creed:Brotherhood and Mass Effect 3 with Dead Space 2 ... both the MP of Assassin's Creed:Brotherhood and Mass Effect 3 are excellent experiences and are far from being shoehorned .. both present fresh new elements rarely seen in MP (i.e stealth in AC:Brotherhood) and both tie well with the overall game and its themes (the N7 missions from ME3, and the Abstergo training program for Templars).

2 teams pitted against each other in a 10kilometer Forest map with ammo and supplies scattered and at the northern corner of the map is a man-made GATE O.O every 10 min. this sucker opens releasing anywhere from 30 to 50 sprinting zombies O.O you choose weather the last 5 round in your pistol is for the enemy team or the zombie hoard that is looking at you like your a freshly baked cookie that your grandma made!!!
