Shooters are a dime a dozen in this day and age, and while some gamers are admittedly fed up with annualized efforts like Call of Duty, 2012 provided more than enough reason to sit up and take notice of the genre once again. For starters, the aforementioned Call of Duty turned up this year with a few new ideas under its belt, notably branching story paths and refined multiplayer. Aside from that, Spec Ops: The Line gave players a reason to care about their protagonist with a heavy focus on narrative, while Borderlands 2 delivered the thrills and spills of a massive loot-driven adventure tailored for co-op play. Then there’s Far Cry 3, a sprawling open-world shooter that offers unprecedented freedom and lush visuals in one adrenaline-pumping package. But what did you guys ultimately feel deserved the accolade for Shooter Game of 2012? Read on to find out.
And the winner is…
Not content with scooping up the award for Best Multiplayer Game of 2012, Gearbox Software’s excellent Borderlands 2 was your shooter of choice for the year. We don’t need to heap praise on the multiplayer component – you can read about that in our separate article – but looking at the game as a shooter, it’s easy to see why it is so revered. Let our review do the talking for you and check out a snippet of what we had to say below.
"Borderlands 2 is by far a giant leap ahead compared to its predecessor, but it's also one of the greatest games to finish off this generation of consoles. You'll get lost under enormous piles of loot, a good-enough story that's surpassed by side missions, and an absolutely hilarious cast of characters. This all comes together in a giant package of joy. Spend the next few weeks or months playing this game with friends and you'll likely wonder how you were able to live without it in your life. Borderlands 2 is a fantastic first-person shooter game with RPG tendencies, and for once, you should believe every bit of the hype surrounding this title. Now go hunt Pandora."----
