Music is a powerful medium. Capable of stirring up long-forgotten memories and evoking powerful emotion in the listener, music can reduce even the burliest of blokes into blubbering, crumpled heaps. And who says that us guys are afraid to show their sensitive side? Poppycock. Of course, video games are no exception to this rule, and as often is the case, a stellar soundtrack can greatly accentuate the on-screen antics, elevating even the most perfunctory scene to hard-hitting greatness.

In a continued celebration of some of gaming’s ear-pleasing aural accomplishments, PSU presents yet another instalment in our on-going Classic Tracks series. For our latest outing, we celebrate a fan-favourite pop anthem from Final Fantasy VIII.

One of the most iconic Final Fantasy tracks ever conceived, Eyes on Me serves as the theme tune to FFVIII, and features vocals by accomplished Chinese singer, Faye Wong. The romantic ditty is heard numerous times throughout the game in some form, with the full version playing during a crucial scene between main characters Squall and Rinoa. Lyrically, it tells of a night club singer hopeful of romance with an audience member. A major hit, Eyes on Me moved over 500,000 copies – a significant feat for a videogame track – and up until Kingdom Hearts was the best-selling game disc ever released in Japan. Western gamers flocked to the track, subsequently bringing Wong a whole new audience in the process.
