PS4 to be released after Xbox 720, hints Sony boss

The successor to the PlayStation 3 may not be released until after the Microsoft’s Xbox 720 hits store shelves, Sony overlord Kazuo Hirai has hinted.
Speaking during an interview with The Times in regards to console release windows, the executive said, “why go first when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?”
Reports on the timing of PlayStation 4’s release have been a mixed bag, with some claiming it won’t be released until early 2014, while others suggest a late 2013 launch. Xbox 720 is believed to hit stores this year, however.
Both consoles have yet to be announced by their respective platform holders, though it is widely believed we’ll hear something by the time E3 comes knocking. In fact, PS4 is rumored to be getting a formal unveiling in just a matter of weeks.
It has also been reported that Sony plans on ditching its iconic DualShock design for the PS4's controller.

This flys in the face of one of last quotes, that it would be " undesirable" to have the next 360 release significantly ahead of the PS4.
It's not like they're going to look at the next Xbox and then start work on the PS4, the development kits are out. I'm sure contracts for hardware have been signed.
This proved a bad strategy with the PS3 and Vita.

Two things I doubt it will be released significantly later then the 720 or whatever they call it. Also it's not that easy to change specs. My best bet is they are waiting to see what the price point will be that way they aren't undercut going into it again like they have been in the past.

If someone expects Microsoft to stop production of their machine and build something brand new based on Sony spec, that person is insane.

I hope the new Xbox has hardware issues just like the 360 does, because since I repair consoles, its more money in my pocket, and M$ is giving me some good buisness with their crappy setup. ;)
This news doesn't surprise me any. Sony seems like they like to be out last, just like they do in E3 when presenting. I don't see anything wrong with it, since Sony is known for catching up on sales,(cough xbox 360).

Sigh as if Sony didn't learn their lesson, if your gonna lie about the reason why you are releasing the ps4 later than the 720 make it at least believable, or is Sony really that gullible.....

Actually Sony is not known for catching up, they're know for past dominance. Sony NEVER had to catch up to anyone with PS1 or PS2. But now it's different.
Last gen
PS2...150m
Xbox...24m
This gen
PS3...70.2m
360,,,70m
It's obvious that Sony's dominance didn't follow them into the current gen and instead of dominating they've been catching up for over 6 years (essentially the entire gen).
Sony market share is down 40m compared to PS2 at year 6
MS market share is up 50m on last gen.

@7 You do realize that the PS3 is finally catching up to the 360 even though the 360 hasnt had a real offical price cut in a long time? Last time I checked Sony had like 2 or 3 price cuts so it was bound for them to catch back up. Now maybe Im wrong but had MS cut the price of the 360 again the ps3 might have been left in the dust
