VGLeaks.com claims to have information relating to a new camera for PlayStation 4 dubbed the “Dual Camera.”
The site claims that the camera is an evolution of the EyeToy with a resolution of 720p and a wide angle lens. They claim it can be used for video chat and face recognition, giving users an added layer of security for logging onto their console (yawn), and can track hand and head movements.
It makes perfect sense that Sony would work on revolutionising the existing PS3 camera for its next-gen console. PlayStation Eye has been poorly utilised by developers but Sony will most definitely want to continue to push PlayStation Move, or its successor, further during the PS4 life-cycle so the camera needs to be up to scratch. And users will expect social features such as video chat to be available out of the box.
VGLeaks also suggests that the PS3 Dual Camera may even come bundled with all PlayStation 4 consoles at launch. Sony is rumoured to reveal its next-gen console at an event in New York City on February 20, 2013. Wonder if we'll hear more then?

Something inside me is still nagging that this big reveal will be about the new home revamp...

gives more security for logging? damn if someone is in front of your TV and has your gamepad in hand he can steal all you have and not care one second about your PSN ... or he's a good friend and it's OK ... and about kids? if you're a responsible person you just won't put thing your kids must not see on the console they're using
This face recognition is aberrant : I might change hair color, grow a beard, get piercings, woman will change makeup, making it unreliable. And there's just no point to it, it serves NO purpose.

Damn, another feature that is rehashed from last (this) gen. Oh well, maybe they will figure out a way to take a pic of yourself and attach it to the characters we use in say third person shooters, like say, SOCOM! That would be neat.

Cool sounds pretty neat, It would be smart of them to include it in every console if they really want people to embrace the new technology.

If true, it might be because they want to make games that adapt or react to how we respond to the in-game content.

Just like the biometric controller, our facial expressions and reactions to content might change what is happening in the game.
To get that to happen, everyone will need to have the new camera, it would need to be universal in order for developers to justify the cost. Even then, when the six axis came out not many developers were on board.
This concept makes more sense to me though, I can see it making games more immersive, or more of a pain in the butt in the hands of certain developers.
We will see!

Until they come out with an IR camera, they are useless to us unfortunate souls who play in a HT room with a projector.

I'm sure the security function will be opt in rather than mandatory. It would be useful for activating personal preferances but they've been saying the controller will do that so it's kinda redundant. But what I'd like to see is it function as a way to control more subtle bits of gameplay, like a game where you have to actually act to convince a person of something with your own facial expressions. because it's not hard to put your face in games but it is harder to control a game without a controller even with the motion control nonsense. If they can get the Move to be a more accepted part of the equation with it, I'm all for it because I know there's more that could be done with it if you just make games that you cant play with a control pad for it.

720p seriously? At least video chat give us full HD. My laptop front camera is 2MP. The fact that its not an ipad that updates every year, so if we dont have good camera in ipad this year it will be there next year. With PS4 however we all have to stick with it for a long long time.
