inFamous Second Son story details: new character, new city, new powers

Sucker Punch Productions has released a host of new details on the story of inFamous: Second Son, a sequel/spin-off set seven years after the events of inFamous 2.

Second Son--in development for PlayStation 4--casts players as new protagonist Delsin Rowe, a 24-year-old Seattle native who finds himself hunted by the Department of Unified Protection. The DUP was formed in response to the chaos that ensued following Cole MacGrath's adventures in New Marais, and is dedicated to stopping future catastrophes by rounding up any human with Conduit powers. Rowe, who possesses the power 'to direct, manipulate, and transform into smoke,' doesn't take kindly to the DUP's agenda, and decides to put up a fight.

The origin of Delsin Rowe's power is still unknown, but Sucker Punch suggests that he may have absorbed it from a passenger he rescued from a fiery bus crash. Regardless, the choices you make in Second Son will influence the story and gameplay you experience moving forward. Second Son is also notable for being the first inFamous game set in a real-world city (Seattle), and Sucker Punch attests that plenty of recognizable landmarks await.

We'll have more on inFamous: Second Son in the coming days, weeks, and months. In the meantime, give us your (spoiler-free) thoughts in the comments below. Are you excited to play as a new superhero, or will you miss Cole MacGrath?

i didnt play the other infamous games because i wasnt really into them but since the PS4 is coming out by Christmas this year the PS4 will be my main console for all games cause i am not a microsoft fan by no means. so i will be picking this game up when it launches and try it out.

I didn't expect an Infamous sequel until I meantioned to a friend that one of Sony's first party devs had stopped working on PS3 months ago to focus on PS4 and he instantly said Suckerpunch to which I had to agree it was a good guess despite not knowing who for sure, I had said the Killzone devs but it seems we were both right. I still need to start the second game though because I wanted to platinum the first game before starting it but got wrapped up in the Assassin's creed series (everyone knows parkour!) butnow I'm halfway through those games and I havent evenstarted the second for Infamous and the new one is coming? This just further displays why it's too early for the PS4 especially if I can't play PS3 games on it.

Im excited that Sucker Punch is continuing the Infamous series over to the PS4. Not having Cole as the main character isn't a big deal, specially when their are other people that have powers that can take up the role in fighting back. The series can and will continue without him. I think this will be the most exciting Infamous yet, and I am extremly eager to play it. =)

@2 You really need to play the first 2. They are great games.

@alpha get going on the 2nd. It is so much better than the first. Not that the first was bad but it was just a lot better.

I loved the first infamous. By the time the second one came out I was working two jobs so I had to prioritize my gaming. Needless to say I lost interest, but I think this just might have resparked that flame.

@3 Its not "too early" for the ps4.

You've had almost 2 years to beat InFamous 2 and you yourself said you never got around to even STARTING it. Who's fault is that?

Want to see gameplay for this.

Glad it's a spin-off rather than a direct sequel to inFamous 2, also these details make the story sound really intersting - although I'm curious as to which ending this is a continuation of, I guess it could possibily follow on from either, which would be great (and would mean inFamous 2 doesn't have a definitive 'true' ending), although I guess it would be pretty hard to pull off as it depends on how the game goes about referring to Cole and what they say happened to him.

Also, I think it would be great, should they choose to make a franchise out of this, if they introduce a new protagonist with each instalment. In the orginal games, it was understandable that you just played as Cole, but with the idea of there being possibly hundreds of different conduits now, I think it would be pretty cool if you play a different one in each game if there are sequels! Especially if it plays out along the idea of each one having a different story to tell in the same situation.

EDIT: Having read #7's spoiler comment I've realised it's only possible for this game to carry on from one of the endings, which is disappointing, but not too bad.

@PSU can you remove this guy's comment so that it doesn't ruin the ending for other people please?
