Ever since the PlayStation 4 was revealed last Wednesday, Sony has received a lot of criticism over not showing the console itself, but the head of Sony UK has some words he would like to exchange with the 'nay-sayers'.
In an interview with Videogamer, Sony Computer Entertainment UK Managing Director Fergal Gara expressed his annoyance over the media and public complaining about the physical PS4 console not being shown last week. He stated, "I understand that frustration but frankly, a box is a box. Is that really the most important thing?"
Gara went on to explain, "So right, it wasn't available to show last night, it wasn't considered appropriate to show it last night. So what? It's much more important to see what the damn thing does. The shiniest piece of black, green or purple plastic ever, you know, whatever, so what? It's not the most important thing."
For the rest of the interview, you can find it here.
Was Sony right for being annoyed over the criticism, or do you believe that a box should have been shown? Let us know down below and keep your eyes posted to PSU as we cover all things PlayStation!

Is there really that much criticism? Granted Sony has gotten in trouble for selling people on things that werent quite real (ie the Killzone target render) but they demonstrated in a large way that the hardware exists and people are developing on it. Plus you have to save some thigns for E3 when MS will show their system. It was a calculated risk even for Sony to show this early because for all ayone knows MS will try to copy all of the features Sony displayed and undercut them on price.
The system design would have been nice to see because then you can put a face to the hardware I guess, but frankly I think the controller was the most exciting thing to see that they could have shown. Especially when everyone's just going to say how ugly the system is anyway.

Console design is also very important. If it's f**k ugly, people will not bother listenning about what it does. Just like everything else. If company is introduciong a product it makes sence to show the damn product not just talk about it

@alpha
I've seen a lot of moaning and critisism because they didn't show the box itself, way more than I'd have ever imagined.
I guess people didn't manage their expectations, I didn't even expect to see gameplay so was pleasantly surprised. Course there's others who just like to bash Sony no matter what they do. -

I couldn't care less that the form factor was omitted from the presentation. People are just really petty, it's a joke. "Ohhh it seems more real to me when I see the box"...So phucking what? It is real to everyone else...lol :D

Exactly my thought on it too. The thing can look like a pile of sh1t and I will still buy it if it performs like they showed it does.

I think it was a good move not showing the console. The announcement and the lack of showing the console caught M$ off guard, and puts them in a situation to where now they have to scramble to put something together to show. Personally, I think Sony wanted something like this to happen. Look at all the talk/hype about it.

I believe they are in the right to be annoyed. Save some excitement for later.. I think the critics THINK they dont have any built and its all some fancy demo. he already made a remark before, save it for later so they can keep the excitement up. That way people wont get bored. I agree.

Mainstream media thrives on negativity, those not cautious enough can get caught in that flow. While I think a Sony rep should keep his cool and word his thoughts more carefully for interviews, I have to agree with him, a box is a box. Even if Sony made the ps4 just a big wooden block with bolted on circuits, I'd still buy it (probably would throw a cloth on its face though ;-) ). Sony made the perfect reveal as far as I'm concerned, they showed brand new features, and most important of all, they showed games that absolutely floored all the jaws in attendance.
The media likes to nitpick whenever possible, I've seen tech sites (otherwise ok tech sites too) making a fuss about there being no women on stage at the Playstation Meeting, now if this is their gender equality stance then sure go ahead, but these same people have no qualms picking up food stuffs served by models wearing cage-like trays as dresses at CES, talk about hypocrytes.
Sony was right in not showing the hardware design, as 1. It's not finalized (This far away from launch it is NEVER finalized). 2. It would take attention away from all the great features Sony is planning on the software front.
If people can't even see the above 2 points as valid reasons, then they're hating cuz they're haters, and nothing more. @ Alpha2
Try a google search bro, it's a s**tstorm of rants.

I agree with Sony 100% & it's way to late for MS to make any late changes to their (dev kits) system in regards to what they know about the PS4. That would postpone their system release and piss off the developers. Maybe that's what Sony wants! Can't wait till E3!

I found stupid to make a critic about Sony no presenting the box. Are people that stupid to buy a console for what it looks? The most important thing is what is does. Those people making the critics are simply looking for anything to trash talk Sony because they know Sony really did a great job.

their unveiling it at E3 just makes more sense than their own press confrence to get somke of their competitors worried. and alot more people talking about it. we're lucky we got to see the controller

As long as it doesn't look like a penis and a pair of balls then I'm good. It's the least of my concerns about a game console.

I think it was a good idea not to show the box. I too think the controller was a bigger/more important thing to show. (I totally like the controller!) Most of us remember the boomerang right? That became a huge distraction so, Sony already took a risk in showing the controller. Showing the box could've been a distraction as well, instead they left us with something to talk about for the months leading up to E3.
I disagree that the box has to look pretty so people will listen about what it does. Remember the PS3? Lol. I personally don't think it's an impressive looking box but I got one! Remember the first PS2? I also don't think that was so nice but....I got one! As much as I hate to say it, I think the new slim xbox is really nice looking but.....I did'nt get one! Show me the games, and the controller, that's what I care about.

I want to know what the console itself offers. How many spots will we be able to utilize to have mics and charging spots and is there anything else special?

I didn't even consider seeing the box until all this media hype complaining about it. frankly I could care less about the box - the controller on the other hand was needed to show, if they didn't show the controller or the box i would of complained. I was very happy with the presentation, Sony did an amazing job and frankly I believe the reveal of the box should wait for E3, but Sony shouldn't even bother responding to this whole box crap - this guys response was less than professional and he should of kept his mouth quiet. For all I care they could put the new PS4 inside old fat PS3s and I'd be happy

I guess you're right it's not like Sony haters are going to change overnight. They can pitch and moan for the next 3 months if they like, maybe they'll get tired and finally just let Sony be sony by the time the box does get shown. I will say the question of how many ports and such is pretty important too in terms of functionality but anyone just wanting to complain because they shell wasn't trotted out is insane.
