PS4 will not support CDs

As technology advances, the storage mediums of today die and new ones are born. The upcoming PlayStation 4 will cease support of a format that Sony's home consoles always have: compact discs.

Reiji Asakura, the Japanese journalist who wrote the bestselling book "Revolutionaries at Sony: The Making of the Sony Playstation and the Visionaries Who Conquered the World of Video Games" tweeted that Sony told him the PS4 will not play CDs or Super Audio CDs. The PlayStation 3 does play both of these formats.

Sony co-developed the CD with Philips back in the 1970s. While many people listen to digital audio files for music, CDs are still the preferred format for many music enthusiasts.

Will the loss of CD support affect you? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to PSU for more PS4 news.

    Hmm... that's interesting.

I'm sure some will jump on this as a stick to beat Sony with, as usual - but I have to say, of all the modern consoles I've owned (PS1, PS2, Xbox, PS3, 360) I've never once used any of them to play a CD. So... makes no difference to me.

It doesn't bother me any and I still listen to CDs...just not on my home audio or TV. Now if my next car doesn't have a CD player (which may happen in the near future) then I may get annoyed.

No biggie if your a music enthusiast you woulodn't be using a PS3 to listen to CD's you 'd have a dedicated CD player.

I don't use CD at all. For me, on a gaming console, only blue ray is important so this is no big deal at all.

Don't care, I don't use my Playstations to play CDs. The PS4 should play DVDs, I cant imagine it not having that format.

they probably got rid of it because they polled people and got the response everyone here is giving... that it doesn't matter. it's odd... seems kinda weird to have an optical drive and not have it play a simple format like CD but i don't think it comes as a loss to anyone.

@7 - Yeah that sounds right to me. I also find it a little odd, surely one of the easiest things to support. I guess it might also have to do with Sony's music unlimited. I'm sure they want a segment of their fanbase to just use that for music. I wouldn't be surprised to see you can't copy mp3's over from your PC either. If that extended to USB too, then I'd be really annoyed.

Slightly off-topic, but has anyone from PSU been trying to find out if the new PS4 has custom soundtracks? I know it wasn't up there with cross-game chat, but it was an oft-asked for feature on PS3.

I don't believe it. All the codec to play the cd is already there. Doesn't make sense. Ill wait for the final announcement on what it can and can not do.

I find this pretty stupid, I do to rip alot of the music from my cds onto my ps3. So this definitely means I wont be trading my ps3 for the ps4.

They better give us custom soundtracks, or have more support from developers for it.

#8 is probably on the money about the music unlimited service.

I recently copied cds to my ps3 only to transfer them to USB stick while my laptop copied more cds. I have in the past copied music to my ps3 to play while Im not in a game. Weird decision to not support it now but oh well. Im still curious on what the heck Super Audio cds are. anyone else? ;p

I never played CDs with a unit only PS1 and even back than i had a Sony 200 disk CD changer. I use it for burining, if it can burn just not play id be happy. Alot of audio heads like myself would still like a quality rip instead of going threw a PC, Thumdrive or stright PC copy to HDD wirelessly etc

Just means I'll have to use a usb stick to save them on my PS4 so I can use the music for in game music, no problem.

I actually never even put a CD in my PS3, it just seems out of date - my digital library on the other hand is huge! but that too is outdated - I currently use Music Unlimited, thanks to the PS+ promo of only like $15 for an entire year subcription. I now use it on my notebook, vita and android as well. I like it alot! just wished I could use the app while playing games, that never make sense, but that will be fixed with PS4 i assume

Cds have diminished in use as DVDs have become a much cheaper medium to use than they once were, but I think it's somewhat arrogant to remove the ability to read it. I only used my PS3 a few times to rip MP3s but the ability should be there for a console that supports disc based media. It's like having a dish washer that only washes salad bowls.

It's actily choosing to tel people they have to take an extra step. It doesnt make sense expecially if they dont have to pay anyone but themselves royalties to use CD technology.

I didn't even realize that there was a Blu-Ray drive made that wouldn't play CDs.

But if it's a Blu-ray drive then why not support it. All it needs is the codec and people still listen to CD's or like me use them to get the songs on the PS3 in the first place.  If it was a chip or something I would understand better but since the hardware is there and the software is so common, I don't.  I hope if enough people like me ask for it they'll add it or add it in a patch later at least.

So this means no PS1 Games.. :( Guess I'll be keeping my ps3 around since ps4 isn't backwards compatible with anything.
