Tomb Raider dev on Lara's future

The developer behind the recent Tomb Raider reboot has touched base on the future of Lara Croft’s archaeologist exploits, confirming we won’t be seeing a return of the spin-off title, The Guardian of Light.

Creative director Noah Hughes spoke highly of Guardian of Light during an interview with OXM, though made it clear there were no plans to pursue that particular venture going forward.

“Guardian was a great opportunity to explore things that we may not have done in the pillar franchise titles, but in that case it was co-op. There are no plans to do anything in that series but it was a great opportunity to do something a little bit outside of the core.”

Looking ahead though, it is clear that Crystal Dynamics’ reboot is the template for which future Tomb Raider titles will be based on, now that Croft’s origins have been established. However, that doesn’t mean the team has a concrete idea of where she’ll be heading next.

“Without knowing exactly what adventures she’s going on, our intent is to carry forward from here. Other than a brief detour into her origins, we kind of like the idea of taking her story forward from this point.”

“Anything we do we’ll run through that lens of really trying to … I mean, what’s important for me is that we don’t really chase reality per se, but chase grounding and credibility and try to create that version of the experience that you can see as someone being real,” he added.

“It’s about grounding things so that you believe in the world and the characters, but still celebrating some of the elements of Lara’s universe from the past and envisioning them in new ways.”

Tomb Raider was released worldwide yesterday. We’ve been playing the game since Friday, so we’ll have our review up for you later today.

I grew up with the Lara Croft games and have fond memories of the ones i've played. But this new one looks promising and I hope if its successful they will make more and make it into a real series again because the others kind of lost track eventually
