Rumor: New Batman title to use Unreal Engine 3

The online CV of Virtuos game designer Daniel Wong has indicated the next entry in the Batman Arkham franchise will utilize the Unreal Engine 3.

Waog’s profile claims that the superhero sequel, which has yet to receive a formal announcement, is being made “using unreal 3,” before adding, “will update on work on more official announcements [sic].”

The CV also mentions an ‘unannounced sandbox action game,’ though this is believed to be unrelated to Batman.

Since Unreal Engine 4 is optimized for next-generation hardware, it is likely that Arkham 3 will be a cross-generation title, or possibly even a current-gen exclusive affair.

It’s worth remembering that Virtuos has previous experience with the franchise, having helped out on Arkham City. In addition, it also had a hand in creating NBA 2K13 and Kinect Disneyland.

While Batman Arkham 3 is expected to release this year, it is unknown if series developer Rocksteady will be involved in the project. Latest reports suggest that Warner Bros. Montreal is working on this latest game instead.

I cringe when I see 'Unreal Engine 3' - few games use it in a way where they dont look like clones of the engine. I also cant stand how the color red tends to come out ugly in UE3 games. Or the greyish "foggy" look for lighting. Anyone else notice this? Then there is the texture popping.. shall I go on? ;p

UE3 is unbearably ugly. It's the curse upon this gen.

I was hoping for a new engine on a new console.

ok wait do you guys mean Unreal 3 or Unreal 4? I highly doubt Rocksteady wants to go backwards, and you talk about Unreal 4 in the article as well

The first two Batman titles from Rocksteady received lots of praise. BioShock Infinite utilizes Unreal Engine 3 and it manages to look beautiful.

Speaking of engines that are a curse upon this generation, how about Frostbite 2 and its pointless dirty lens effect that recent titles seem to mimick? What about its desaturated color pallete and sunglare?

I don't think it's too much to ask for clean visuals.

The best game I have seen the URE3 run on is Unreal Tournament 3. It was built on the PS3's Cell, and was the only processor at the time to max out that graphics engine. But the URE3 is way outdated, but I understand if the new Batman game is going to be released on this current gen systems, and next gen, they have to do it to make it work. But, the URE3 should look nice and crisp on next gen with no rendering issues during gameplay.

So long as the game plays fine, I don't care.  Engines are only as good as the devs using them.

While I'm with you on the hate for the dirty-lens-effect, I found the sunglare to be quite realistic, the color pallette - I'm sure - is a design decision, the Frostbite 2 is an awesome piece of tech, I'd just be a lot more happier if games stopped using that stupid lens effect... and pretty much all lens effects in general, since it takes away from the immersion, I'd much rather see more of the muzzle glare and muzzle flash used in KZ2 and (I think) KZ3, looks a lot more realistic imo.
