Kaz Hirai on why the actual PS4 console wasn't shown in NYC

While the PlayStation 4 unveiling in New York City last month garnered plenty of praise, it wasn't without criticisms. One complaint many have brought up was the lack of showing the actual console itself. In an interview with BBC, Sony President and CEO Kaz Hirai laid out the company's reasoning behind the decision.

“I think that, you know, we still have a long ways to go before the actual product launch and there are going to be a lot of opportunities for us to talk about and provide additional details on the PlayStation 4,” Hirai explained. “It wasn’t actually a launch, we just talked about the console and there will be more information to come, but it keeps people guessing and that’s a good thing.”

With the PS4 hype train running, Sony will need additional fuel leading up to the console's launch to keep consumers interested and talking. Surely, new games, features, as well as the actual design of the PS4 will be revealed in the coming months, especially at events like E3 2013.

So, he's all but admitted that the show was to let out a fair few details predominantly in the hope that Xbox will come out with details on their next one at some stage soon and then PS4 can decide how they'll respond to them. He's giving Sony a fair bit of room to make changes if needed from what he said there.

I kind of figured, no surprise. It was kind of obvious what they were doing.

the announcement was obviously to announce the PS4 won't be released after the X720 like this gen, and to announce existing partnerships to pave the way for new ones ; with the serious possibility of the X720 being fairly less powerful, will leave Microsoft with only one choice : target the casuals even more and thus make the developers for hardcore gamers slam the door on their face

I'm pretty sure Yoshida said in an interview that the final design is still being finalised.
