Gran Turismo 6 officially announced, due holiday 2013

Gran Turismo 6 has been officially announced by series creator Kazunori Yamauchi during the GT 15th anniversary event at Silverstone today.

The racing sequel will be released for PlayStation 3 in holiday 2013, and promises to deliver ‘new levels of authenticity’ to the franchise, as well as the expected dose of new tracks and cars.

GT6 will boast a new game engine and expand upon connectivity with other devices, including smart phones and tablets, as well as improved social and community functionality.

Those of you who own GT5 will be pleased to learn that all tracks and vehicles from the 10 million-selling racer will be packed under the hood of this latest instalment. However, GT6’s fresh additions will bring the total number of day-one cars to 1,200, with more due to be added via updates.

In terms of tracks, the iconic Silverstone Circuit will be included as one of seven new locations in Polyphony Digital’s latest racer. In total, there will be 33 tracks available, 19 of which are brand new. Players can also look forward to an enhanced physics engine, allowing for a new suspension system. In addition, the tire and aerodynamics modelling has also been completely revamped.

Polyphony also used the 15th anniversary event to announce that the Gran Turismo series has sold 70 million units worldwide.

Said Yamauchi-san: “It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo.

"Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We're pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform. However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments. I am very pleased with everything about the new game and the new additions, but the launch will be only the beginning for GT6. The game will continue to develop throughout its life. I already have many ideas for things I want to achieve in the next 15 years of Gran Turismo!"
