The Elder Scrolls Online is not free-to-play, subscription required

Just when we were all looking forward to playing The Elder Scrolls Online with its inviting free-to-play model, ZeniMax Online has confirmed that the MMO will in fact be subscription-based.

Speaking with Gamestar, General Manager Matt Firor explained the reasoning behind the decision.

“Charging a flat monthly (or subscription) fee means that we will offer players the game we set out to make, and the one that fans want to play”, said Firor. “Going with any other model meant that we would have to make sacrifices and changes we weren't willing to make.”

He goes on to say that players will have 30 days free access when they buy the game and then will have to pay a flat monthly fee to continue playing. That fee has been stated to be $14.99 a month. ZenixMax plans to announce discount and special offers at a later date.

At a time when PlayStation 4 is leading the way with the free-to-play model with games like Planetside 2, DUST 514, War Thunder and Warframe, we can’t help think that it’s a strange decision from ZeniMax. Will you fork out for The Elder Scrolls Online?
