TGS 2013 - Best RPG Award: Lightning Returns

It's Japan, so there were obviously going to be a lot of RPGs at this event; those meant for the western market and otherwise. The Final Fantasy XIII series in particular is very polarizing in the west. There is very little middle ground --people either enjoy the series or hate it. Lightning Returns brought a lot of freshness to the franchise, and RPG in general, from our experience with the demo. The dead time from the ATB system RPGs employ has been eliminated with a creative use of the dress sphere system from FFX-2, making the Cloud costume available for Lightning have a gameplay purpose other than cosmetics and fan service. This new combat system it is employing also added lots of depth and strategy to the series, and was more enjoyable to play than previous titles.
