PS4 launches with 0.4% fail rate

Sony has revealed that PlayStation 4 has launched with a fail rate of around 0.4 per cent.

The hardware giant confirmed that the issues reported with launch day consoles thus far fall in line with the company’s expectations. The comments come after consumers, as well as IGN and Kotaku, flagged up some issues with the new machine.

Writing in a statement issued to IGN (via MCV), Sony said, “A handful of people have reported issues with their PlayStation 4 systems.

“This is within our expectations for a new product introduction, and the vast majority of PS4 feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

“We are closely monitoring for additional reports, but we think these are isolated incidents and are on track for a great launch.

“There have been several problems reported, which leads us to believe there isn’t a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of systems. The number of affected systems represents less than 0.4 per cent of shipped units to date, which is within our expectations for a new product introduction."

Hardware failures among launch consoles are nothing new. Xbox 360 was notorious for being plagued with issues upon its release back in 2005, which were colloquially dubbed the ‘Red Ring of Death.’ will have a full list of known errors so far and a list of fixes later today.
