Bioware expecting controversy over Dragon Age: Inquisition's 'fully gay' character
Bioware is no stranger to controversy. The Mass Effect and Star Wars: The Old Republic games received a backlash from anti-gay protesters with thousands of letters apparently sent to its HQ complaining of same-sex relationships in its games, presumably from people worried that it may turn them or their off-spring gay.
Well, Bioware isn’t about to back down against the protests for its latest title Dragon: Age Inquisition after confirming that Dorian, an outcast mage, will be the first 'fully gay' character in the series.
Speaking on the official Dragon Age website, Dragon Age: Inquisition writer David Gaider revealed that Dorian is gay.
“He is, in fact, the first fully gay character I've had the opportunity to write,” said Gaider. It added an interesting dimension to his back story, considering he comes from a place where "perfection" is the face that every mage puts on and anything that smacks of deviancy is shameful and meant to be hidden. Dorian's refusal to play along with that façade is seen as stubborn and pointless by his family, which has contributed to his status as a pariah."
When asked whether he is happy with “how his character turned out” Gaider said: “I suppose this aspect of Dorian will make him controversial in some corners, but I was glad to include it. It made writing Dorian a very personal experience for me, and I'm hopeful that will make him seem like a fully realized character to fans in the end.”
The fact that Bioware has deliberately tailored a Q&A session with the writer that explores Dorian’s background, with some probing questions obviously designed for him to reveal this aspect of Dorian’s sexuality, suggests that Bioware is more than happy to stand-up to those people who have complained about previous games by going a step futher than its other titles, which only featured bi-sexual characters.
And why not? Does it really matter whether characters are straight, homosexual or bi-sexual? Are you offended?
Dragon Age: Inquisition is due for release on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC on October 7, 2014.----
