Legendary developer Yu Suzuki has touched base on Shenmue III during a recent chat with GameReactor, stating the long-requested action-adventure sequel will be made given the ‘right opportunity.’
Suzuki-san was speaking during an event in Barcelona, when he was quizzed if we’ll ever see a continuation of Ryo Hazuki’s quest for revenge, which fans have been waiting for since 2001’s Shenmue II.
In response, Suzuki said, “If the circumstances and opportunities are right, I’m ready to create Shenmue 3.”
He also discussed some of the technological advancements that the series would benefit from in the years since Ryo’s last adventure. Check out the full interview for more, including some interesting chatter on the Golden Age of Arcade Games.
Shenmue was released on the Dreamcast in 1999 and arrived in the west the following year. The game follows Hazuki-san, an 18-year-old student from Japan, who attempts to track down the man responsible for his father’s murder.
The game combines elements of action, adventure, and RPG, and was considered highly innovative at the time of release, not to mention holding the record as the then-most expensive video game ever produced.
Despite building an intensely loyal fanbase, a third chapter in the series has yet to materialize. Nonetheless, the topic of Shenmue III refuses to budge, and every now and then we’re treated to some hopeful chatter on the topic, usually from Suzuki-san himself.
