Top 10 scariest PlayStation characters

Halloween is coming up soon, folks! What better way to celebrate than to list off the creatures and characters from horror games past that still send chills down our hunched over spines? I’m going to rank them from 10 to 1, 10 being creepy but not nightmare inducing, and 1 being the one that still makes me sleep with the lights on.

10.Darkside- Kingdom Hearts

I remember when I was around eleven years old, I saw the trailer for the first Kingdom Hearts game and I was so excited! “I get to go on a magical romp/adventure with my favorite Disney characters? Mom, mom, MOM.” This game is what made me beg for a PS2. Fortunately for me, and unfortunately for my mom, I got what I wished for that Christmas. I could not pop that disk into my brand new PS2 fast enough and my excitement took a complete one-eighty to terror when I saw this first boss. It took me forever to get the courage to beat him.

9. Deathclaws- Fallout

You’re moseying through the Wasteland, listening to some tunes; things are going pretty swell, considering the circumstances. Then out of nowhere, this giant combination of the meanest parts of everything comes up and wrecks you- just rips you to shreds like that’s its job. You’re going through Stimpaks like they’re candy and you feel like you didn’t do anything to deserve this, but you probably did. You’ll wish you never left the vault.

8. Sweet Tooth- Twisted Metal

A killer clown with a flaming head and a combat ice cream truck, this guy gave me the heebie-jeebies every time I saw him on the cover as the mascot for the Twisted Metal series.
I never played Twisted Metal myself due to my immense fear of clowns (thank Stephen King), but I watched my cousins play all the time as a kid. I hated clowns then and I hate them now.

7. The Twitcher- Dead Space

Necromorphs are reanimated corpses out to get you. They’re ugly, they’re mean and they’re tough to beat, with their own unique physical attributes. As you play Isaac throughout the series, it seems to get harder and harder to put these things out of your misery. All of them are horrible, but for some reason, the Necromorph that scares me the most is the Twitcher. It’s so fast! I get nervous every time and can’t seem to aim. It’s jittering and jerky movement creeps me out too.

6. Labyrinth Madman- Bloodborne

Out of all the blood-chilling creatures in this fantasy horror, the Labyrinth Madman gets me everytime. These scythe wielding corpses are creepy looking and, even though their appearance seems wispy and frail, don’t be fooled. These things are on you so fast, and will hit you before you can even react. What’s worse is you don’t even have to be in his line of sight to make him become aware of you. He has a ridiculously long aggro range, so he can hear you in close by rooms and rush you before you even know he exists! Also, these things make horrible screeching noises that are downright unpleasant to your ears and your soul.

5.Alma- F.E.A.R

Little girls with long black hair seem to be a theme of creepiness in the horror genre and Alma is no exception. You’re part of a team assessing the shutdown Origin Facility, where Alma was experimented on twenty years ago. This first person shooter revolves around this mysterious little girl with psychic abilities, which cause death and destruction wherever she goes. What does she want? Why is she doing such horrible things, including but not limited to: setting people on fire, hurling them through windows, causing hallucinations, flesh melting, releasing monsters from another dimension, etc? Her ominous giggling as she does these things will make you shudder.

4. Clickers- The Last of Us

The Last of Us is an awesome, story-oriented apocalypse survival game and since you can’t just go shooting everything up with limited resources, the enemies can be hard to deal with. Clickers, scare me the most. I HATE these things. These are humans in the third stage of infection who have completely lost their sight and get their nickname from the eerie clicking noises they make. Much like any other blind enemy you encounter in video games, you can walk right in front of these ugly things and be fine, so long as you make no noise and they’re not “clicking”. Their clicking is like bat echolocation and can detect you. If you alert these monsters, they will catch you quickly and grapple you before you can even react.

3.The Iron Maiden- Resident Evil 4

I hope you have a whole lot of incendiary grenades for these things, because you’ll need them. As slowly as they shamble towards you, you’d think it wouldn’t be so terrifying. The way their heads twitch and jerk around as they back you into a corner is so unsettling, you can’t seem to aim correctly, which sucks because aiming with this enemy has to be precise. There are two ways you can kill the Iron Maidens: 1) Burn them. 2) You aim and shoot at their weak points, which can only be viewed through an infrared scope. Otherwise, they just regenerate and will even come after you if you shoot off their legs. If they catch you, they will grab you, impaling you a hundred times at once, doing tons of damage. They just want hugs, though.

2. Chris Walker- Outlast

Much like a combination of the popular survival horror game, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and Fatal Frame, Outlast is a survival horror game where you play as a character who is pretty much helpless. You’re armed with nothing but a camera, which can run out of battery power and leave you in the dark. You encounter many homicidal maniacs on your investigation for your top story as a journalist, but Chris Walker is the worst. You’re met with his gnarled, disgusting face several times throughout the game. Not only is he huge with enough strength to crush a human skull with one hand, but he’s almost as fast as your small, and agile protagonist, or as Walker likes to call you, “little pig”. You’ll be squealing like one for sure when this psychopath starts chasing you.

1. “Pyramid Head”- Silent Hill

This iconic character has been given many names by fans of the series, like Triangle Head, Red Pyramid, Bogeyman, etc. This may be typical, but of course, Pyramid Head has to be first. This guy has haunted me since I first witnessed his towering, metal noggin. The second time you meet him in Silent Hill 2, you walk in on him him having a… “private moment” with two creatures called “Mannequins”, which are just two sets of female legs stuck together, and they didn’t seem to be consenting. Just because they can’t say “no”, doesn’t mean “yes”, sir. I can still hear the edge of his sword scraping against the metalwork of the building. He has been an ongoing antagonist and/or presence in the Silent Hill franchise since his first appearance in Silent Hill 2. He’s ungodly strong and resilient. He moves slowly, but is so huge, he takes up just enough space to where you can’t escape. He just won’t die, and I don’t think he ever will, at least, not in my nightmares.
