[Editor's Note: I did not sign an NDA for this closed door session, nor was I told not to write my impressions of it. If this was something I was not supposed to write, I apologize fully and will take the necessary actions to remedy the situation. I was told ahead of time that if things were going to be under an NDA situation, I would be asked to sign a contract stipulating such.]
A city is hit with a blast that radiates around six miles in circumference. People are turning into something they’re not. The police are abandoning their jobs and staying hidden within their homes. The city has been blocked off by a fence that keeps the unknown virus contained and lets nobody leave. Gangs and addicts are organizing to take control of certain parts of the city, yet one man, one man survives. His name is Cole and within his body something is forever changing, evolving, turning him into something more than just your run-of-the-mill bike courier. Cole is the city's one last hope, the people's last chance at respectable life. Do you help these people or do you kill everyone mercilessly and without remorse? The choice is yours. It’s up to you to become famous or inFamous.

Now, I know a lot of people are anticipating this title and I understand full well that inFamous is in a very early development stage. It is because of this that I need you guys to take what I say and feel about the title with that in mind. Sucker Punch is at the first rung of a ladder and they still have a ton of climbing left to do before the game is finished. This was clearly evident to me today. To be quite honest with all of you, if I had one word to choose in order to describe the experience I had, it would be... lackluster.
Please don't take that the wrong way. I will say that inFamous has A LOT of potential to be something special. I am a huge supporter and fan of the Sly Cooper franchises and I have absolute faith that Sucker Punch will be able to turn out an incredible title come launch. However, as it stands right now, inFamous has a long way to go in becoming a stellar blockbuster hit.
The main character is a bike courier named Cole. As we know, he's survived the devastating blast and acquired supernatural powers. He has a couple of friends, including a potential love interest. And that's all that's known, and frankly, all there seems to be right now. Therein lies the problem; according to the guys at Sucker Punch, the gameplay comes before the story.
Now, I can understand and even agree that gameplay makes a title what it is, however I cannot say that I can agree that a title with a lackluster story can ever attain true greatness. This was almost the vibe that I felt from the designers as they discussed the product. Yes, it's an open world where you can play by your own rules and enjoy the environment for everything it is, unfortunately I feel without an engaging storyline that drives the gamer to progress and want to learn more, we’re going to end up with a less enthralling Grand Theft Auto IV.

Okay, so even though that initially sounds fantastic, how long did Grand Theft Auto IV really keep your attention? For me, the title became stale the moment I beat it. There is nothing exciting in that open world to keep you coming back. I feel inFamous may suffer from this same problem. Now that I have that out of the way, let me jump into the gameplay that I had a chance to observe.
I witnessed Cole riding along the top of a train, cruising through the open city, which, to the game's credit, was absolutely stunning. There was a great amount of destructibility present within the environment as well. If you want, you can destroy that environment from the top down, as Cole just happens to be a parkour professional; he can scale the tallest structures with ease. To interject, did I mention that ... Don't know what to say about this...you say it didn't impress you, but it has alot of potential...
My response?
This game better be kick *** if Sony's spending millions of dollars for an ad campaign.
From what I've seen and heard, it's going to be amazing, though.

I've got to say guys, he clearly states several times that it's early and to keep that in mind while reading. It didn't blow him away, but he doesn't dismiss it either. We'll continue to cover inFamous up until release (obviously), so if anything really drastic changes you'll know about it.

Dave, I share your feelings. He has the right to say how he feels. If they put out a demo, then they better be prepared for criticism. I want to hear the truth, and nothing but the truth. Quit being fanboys people...
I saw it getting demo'd on G4 and that's exactly what I thought, it looked almost bad. I could see how it COULD become awesome, but at this stage it looked so bland and without any character.
I saw about 10 games that really impressed me like Red Faction, Mercs 2, Dead Space, LBP, Motorstorm 2, Gears 2, Far Cry 2, RE5 etc. and this game paled big time next to these titles.

calm down he is saying what it is at the moment and while i have no doubt that this will be a great game, but letting things slide because it is a preview can end up with people being fooled into buying a Lair or Haze quality(or lack thereof)title. i still can not see this game failing, although i also can not see FF13 on......that...other thing.......l..o....l..????

I always get this game confused with Prototype! Anyway, the game looks good from what I have seen of it so far. However, I really don't know if I will buy this when it comes out. I get really bored...really quickly with open world gameplay and, like GTAIV, I'll probably end up playing it for a couple of hours and then sell it off.

From what I've read and heard of this game, it is sound truly amazing. But there is a lot of negative talk in this article about Infamous though which I don't quite understand but you have said that the game was an early build and that you hope for the best. So I don't know what to think of this preview....

Dave is right on point with this blog...i saw a live demo of infamous on G4 last night and it did not look like the game that sony is saying it will be....did not look fun to me at all...then again...this game is really early on in the cycle and i am glad sony did not show this at their press conference..on the other hand...i do not think that this game will live up to everyone's expectations anyway

Remember how different Warhawk looked in its early stage to now? that's probably the case with Infamous. I think it will get a lot better.

The thing that impressed me on the G4 presentation was the abiliity to climb anywhere (similar to Assasins creed) and the detail of the city (like GTA4) and the lighting powers (like StarWars jedi style). I would like to play it for me game play > than story.

WOW fishing for clicks with something YOU KNOW you aren't supposed to be writing about, hence the that gut feeling that caused you to put the disclaimer and second, the closed doors.
Worst part isn't even your unprofessionalism, its the fact you basically just wrote a review of game that has about 8 or 9 more months of development.
This is just such poor journalism, reminds me of something i'd see from a euro gaming site.

In the trailer it looked like he could make some kind of ball of electricity and lob it like a grenade, Hopefully you can change your look as you progress through the game making moral choices, maybe co op would be fun playing with good and evil friends.

Lol SlowDeath, do you even read what you're saying? If you don't sign an Non-Disclosure Agreement, it generally means you can disclose information that you received, unless otherwise stated by an "off-the-record" remark much like I received at my Fallout 3 Hands-on by Pete Hines.
I've always stayed in accordance to the rules that the designers and representatives at E3 had laid out for us in attendance. I was told when I received my invites to these closed-door showings that I may be put under an NDA and wouldn't be able to discuss it. However, I was never put under a NDA and this leads me to believe that I am in the clear to discuss it.
Also -- stay awake a bit and understand the difference between a preview, an eye-on, and a review. It'll help you in the future.

You passed judgement on nearly every aspect of the game, saying i hope it gets better does not erase that,a preview is a look at the game and the things it intends to try to pull off.I'm not shocked by it,your not the only one,1up seems to be the only site these days that still understand the difference betwwen preview and review.
And if your so sure your right, then why did you put the disclaimer there?

Well, the fact that they are putting the gameplay before the story kind of miffs me a bit. I can't say that i would be to excited to play this game if there was next to no story in it. But then, the game looks awesome, and as you say it still has masive potential.
Sony must believe it is going to be good though if they are going to spend millions advertising it everywhere on tv and print. Hopefuly their confidence in the title means that they they think a god storyline will be there.
Either way...I am still excited for this game. And from your impressions, i am stil very impressed, especialy with the way that the citizens of the City react and behave. And it all sounds great. It's just the lack of story that makes me not sure.
i got bored of GTAIV before i even finished the story as it got SO BORING. I think this would get boring through lack of story :(

I dont see why this writer is asking us to understand that this is his opinion of something that is in very early stages of development. Why cant he himself understand it is in a very early stage before forming his opinion. You dont look at a half built house and criticize it for not having cabinets yet. "guys, im not impressed with this house at all, look it doesnt even have furniture yet." "hey guys, i know they just started building, but the walls arent even painted yet, def not looking good to me." just a bit of an analogy.

The entire point of an impression is to judge what you've seen and what is available. That's the point, there is no other. At this point in time, yes, the game has a long way to go and currently, it didn't impress me for the hype that it was receiving. Could it be a blockbuster title once they're done with it? Absolutely.
However, an EARLY sneak peek is just that and at this stage, that is how I felt thus far. If I get to see the game again down the road and it looks a lot more polished, i'll be giving my opinion on that.
It's funny, I can write impressions on Fallout 3, Facebreaker, etc... And because they're positive... no complaints. But once I show a bit of negativity to a title that was widely accepted as marvelous, I get criticized for it. Everyone is going to vary in opinion. I stand by mine. I expected a lot from this title and if it was far enough a long to show, then I will take that as them being ready to hear an opinion about it.
The guy's at Sucker Punch are great people and I enjoyed talking to them. I think inFamous will be amazing -- but it still needs a lot of work.

Dave, I completely agree with you based off of what I have seen and heard. Any game without a good story is going to have trouble being great. It is still possible, but not incredibly likely. Also, I felt that the gameplay looks just ok at this point.
Everyone seems to be excited for this game because it has "potential". I would just like to point out that all games have potential when they are just starting out and no one should expect great things from an unimpressive looking game in an unproven franchise. Wait till it looks good before getting too hyped about it people. Otherwise there's a good chance you'll end up dissapointed. -

Umm lackluster stories never become great? How stupid can one person be? Left 4 Dead? Gears of War? TimeSplitters series? Battlefield series? Warhawk? Every racing game ever made? The list goes on and on and you are an idiotic b¡tch.
