VGchartz: 5 million PS3’s sold to consumers

Vgchartz.com is reporting that as of October 13, 2007 the PlayStation 3 has sold over 5 million consoles worldwide.

– 2.13 million in the Americas
– 1.24 million in Japan
– 1.70 million in other regions (including Europe, Australia, and others)

Total of: 5.07 million units sold.

The PlayStation 3 was first released on November 11 2006 in North America, six days later in Japan and on March 23 2007 in Europe. The console sold on a weekly average of 105,208 units, mainly competing with Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which currently stands at 11.83 million units sold. The Wii stands at 12.42M units sold.

According to Vgcharts, their data is based off of number of units sold to consumers, and not number of consoles sold to retailers. They explain that this is the best way to do it as it accurately shows how many actual consoles are in people’s homes.

Now possibly with the release of the new 40GB PlayStation 3 and the USD 100 price drop of the 60GB, we may see a large spike in U.S. sales as seen in the U.K. If sales continue you could see the PS3 be neck and neck with its competitors by next year.
