PlayStation history repeats: Dead Or Alive 5 vs. Tekken Tag Tournament 2

17 August 2012

In a bizarre coincidence, Dead or Alive will compete against the Tekken franchise for the second time in PlayStation history, but Team Ninja isn't concerned about its leading competitor.

Speaking to PSU at Gamescom, Team Ninja producer Yosuke Hayashi told us that it was "funny that the two franchises clash again on PlayStation platforms.”

“The last DOA game on a PlayStation platform was DOA2 in 2000," said Hayashi-san. "This was released around the same time as Tekken Tag Tournament. Now both the new games, DOA5 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2, are being released in the same month."

When asked if he was concerned about DOA5's rival, Hayashi-san shrugged off the competition. "DOA5 is applicable to this generation, from the overall concept, to the stages and game engine, “ he said.

Dead or Alive 5 marks the first entry in the popular beat-‘em-up franchise to be developed without creator Tomonobu Itagaki, who departed Team Ninja in June 2008.

The brawler features guest appearances from SEGA’s Virtua Fighter franchise, with battles employing a rock-paper-scissors-style system, where strikes beat throws, throws beat holds and holds beat strikes. Oh, and breast physics are more realistic than ever, too.

Dead or Alive 5 is due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 25 in the U.S. and September 28 in Europe.
