The two development teams responsible for the creation of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance have admitted they sometimes clash during development.
Due out in early 2013, Metal Gear Rising is a joint effort between Platinum Games and Kojima Productions. However, the latter’s Yuji Korekado revealed that due to many similarities between the companies, tensions between the studios do rear their head on a frequent basis.
“Platinum Games is a studio that’s very similar to Kojima Productions in that they have a very specific belief towards their game creating,” said Korekado-san, during a chat with EDGE.
“They have things that they don’t want to change, that they really believe in. At Kojima Productions we have the same strong feelings toward creating a better game."
“But because we are similar, when there are things that we want changed, we clash all the time. We always clash. We have to discuss.”
Elaborating, Korekado-san highlighted friction between writer Etsu Tamari (Kojima Productions) and director Kenji Saito (Platinum Games), solved by sticking the pair in a room for three days in an attempt to get them to sort out their differences.
Elsewhere, he revealed that both firms were locked in heated debate in regards to Rising’s timeline, with Kojima Productions keen on setting the game between Metal Gear Solid 2 and 4, while Platinum wanted an alternate timeline.
“In the end, the motivation of both studios is to make a better product. When we collide, we can usually see what is good and what is bad in each other’s ideas. And it helps us make something better,” he explained.
“So as the creative producer, I think we have a lot of problems, but all these problems have given us the right direction to follow.”
Metal Gear Rising was originally unveiled at E3 2009, when it was solely a Kojima Productions-fronted project made famous for a gameplay demo where Raiden was slicing up water melons.
However, development stalled when the team were unable to successfully integrate the gameplay into Metal Gear’s stealth trappings, and so Platinum Games was brought into the mix to help create the action-oriented project that we know today.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is scheduled for release in February 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
