Square Enix’s Motomu Toriyama has revealed that Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will not feature multiple ending sequences.
Instead, the upcoming JRPG – the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy XIII series – will have a single, definitive conclusion.
“The concept behind the design of Lighting Returns is that it will be the concluding chapter of the Lightning Saga,” Toriyama told VG247. “Unlike in the previous title, there will not be multiple possible endings created from differently branching interpretations of history, but instead the story will lead to the one true ending.
“Having said that, the game is structured so that time is constantly ticking away during gameplay and the world moving and changing with it, meaning that every time you play through you can have a new experience.”
Due out this year for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Lightning Returns sees the titular heroine battling to save the world from annihilation following the events of Final Fantasy XIII-2. Lighting will be given advice from Hope via cellphone throughout her adventure, and will boast over 20 customisable costumes.
