There is some Smurftastic news for all you Smurfs fans. To coincide with the 3D hybrid live-action/animated family comedy The Smurfs 2, Ubisoft today announced it will develop and publish a video game based on the film. Come this July, we’ll all get Smurfed as another movie-tie-in game is released to critical disappointment and anger from aging hipsters claiming cartoons from the ’80s and ’90s are far superior to today’s crapfest. Really, is there a better way to spend your summer than watching a family-friendly movie featuring creepy blue gnomes who prance around with a single female Smurfette? Sure there is! Bring home the game based on said movie featuring creepy blue gnomes.
The game is in development by Ubisoft and WayForward and will be released as an action-adventure platform. Make sure you pre-order soon as supplies are sure to go fast when the game launches in July on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and Wii U.
As it turns out, the original The Smurfs movie (at least the 2011 one) took in more than $560 million at box offices worldwide. That’s Smurfing incredible! In addition, Ubisoft and Sony Pictures Consumer Products’ The Smurfs Dance Party was one of 2011’s top-selling movie licensed games in the U.S. Without a doubt, The Smurfs 2 video game tie-in will sell more copies than the combined sales of FIFA 14, Battlefield 4, and whatever Call of Duty Activision is on this year.
If you have kids, or if you’re a kid at heart, you may actually love The Smurfs 2 game. It’s said to be an action-packed adventure platformer that allows fans to dive into the magical Smurfs Village and relive iconic moments and key environments from the feature film. You’ll play as–wait for it–a Smurf! You’ll be immersed in an interactive adventure through the movie’s enchanting environments including New York City and Paris.
You can play the game cooperatively with friends as you are able to choose between nine Smurfs featured in the movie and you can join each other in a fun multiplayer experience with up to four users playing simultaneously. Don’t have any friends that want to play The Smurfs 2 with you? Big surprise. For those looking to go solo on this hard-hitting masterpiece, know you can Smurf the game all by your Smurf-self.
Think we are making fun of The Smurfs 2? Well, get over it. Here are some real official sounding statements from important Smurf lovers at the publisher and developer headquarters.
“Aligning ourselves with an industry leader like Ubisoft is a perfect complement to our marketing efforts for the film,” said Mark Caplan, vice president, Sony Pictures Consumer Products. “The game will help bring audiences closer to the magical world of the Smurfs, allowing players to interact and control their own adventures.”
“By collaborating with Sony Pictures on the iconic Smurfs license again we are able to extend the experience from film to immersive gameplay,” said Christian Salomon, vice president of worldwide licensing, Ubisoft. “The family-friendly ‘The Smurfs 2’ video game will allow players of all ages to continue the fun and revel in new adventures.”
